rebuttle
i find this so frustrating!
damien says he has no interest in: 1.money 2.fame 3."becomming bigger and bigger" so so he can play to bigger crowds yet he goes and puts his songs on tv shows like "lost",movies with julia roberts in them, remixes cannonball and reissues o and other singles. with regards closer he says he "wishes he hadn't jumped on that band waggon" because it only brought him more money and fame. but then WHY did he put another song on lost. if he hates money and fame so much then why does he do it? for the love of the music? for the buzz of playing live live? then why doesn't he just gig around ireland and only preform live. he could never release a second album. perhaps the could record their live shows and sell those at the gigs. then he could play, not be famous, and have some but not a lot of money.it solves all his problems. it makes sence to me. i hate to say it - (because im so passionate about damiens music and id love to believe there are some people who manage to make it into their 30's without becomming complete money driven so and sos) BUT it kinda seems like he is milking it a little...while saying he isnt and doesn't want to. i've never been in his position so i can't judge but im running out of excuses. thoughts?

Well i can see your point - but damo doesn't really want to get noticed as much as he has done - He doesn't look at the amount a certain project will enhance his following - He does things (such as Closer) for his own musical thirst - he is an artist and wants to see what he can create and not neccesarily be thinking of the money he can gain afterwards. In addition i think you will find that many re-releases and the mix of cannonball begin to grow out of Damos hands. Though he recorded and released the record himself - he does have a manager who could possibly have a mind for marketing and gaining more money from Damos music. But to be honest, with comparison to many other artists of the singer songwriter genre, i really don't think Damo is this overly commercialised. In comparison to someone like James Blunt Damo is so much less honed in to the general public and doesn't really create songs that he wants people to catch on to. Damo creates the sounds that he wants and it just happens that he has become extremely popular because people are able to understand his intelligent music. I don't think in all honesty, that damo is a musician searching for fame and fortune; I can tell this by listening to his interviews whereby he says that he has only just been able to buy his first house ( a small one may i add) and a car; as he said essentials for life! He also will walk on stage wearing a T-shirt or jumper that you saw him wearing about 2 years ago! I think though that unless you are a monk, people enjoy having money;the extent to how much they enjoy having is another question and how they spend it, but it seems to me that Damo is getting money but sees no need to spend a ridiculous amount and move out to LA and live in a big house. The bottem line is he is a guy who lives for his music, nothing else - That to me is a true musician. Though this speil might sound overly biased as i'm such a big Damo fan and i would be horrified to find out Damo is a materialistic money grabber, but i would find it hard to believe.

Hmmm possibly a little harsh there hbhdaem! - but I can certainly see where you are coming from here. Its more than likely he just realised that he's in a position where he can let the masses hear, and be influenced by his own musical creation. its certainly a position I'd love to be in... And as you said about doing it for the love of the music, he does love music, and he wants everyone else to love his music too I guess...? Or have I missed the point here!??

No i think you are right oceansheep, people who love music certainly want to share it not for money but for the connection music creates between people and how it enables people to forget about whats going on in the world- now theres nothing materialistic about that

i dont understand how being involved with 'closer' had anything to do with 'musical thirst', if that had been the case then surely he would have offered new compositions. Its' far to easy to blame other people for decisions made in relation to his music that seem at odds with the image that damien projects.

Damien did offer new compositions for Closer, didn't he? And some of these are used throughout the movie. It just so happened that those behind the film had a preference for The Blower's Daughter to be used as the theme to the movie.

Damien did offer new compositions for Closer;a song actually called Closer which was scrapped. Moreover, using "the Blowers Daughter" in closer, as i stated earlier creates "artistic thirst" whereby Damo can put his songs in different movie situations and see the effect they have on the overall feeling of the scene. The blowers daughter is certainly not a song whereby it would not fit in a film; the bold lyrics explain that.

maybe he is just a fan of the show and wants to lend his music for it?
does everything have to be money orientated? so what if he makes a few bucks off it... its not a total contradiction. Its not as if he is stuffing the song down anyones throat.. it is being used in a way that suits itself. I know if i was choosing track's for a show and came across damiens music id do anything in my path to convince him to lend it to us...

I don't think it's such a big deal really, his songs appear on loads of TV programmes, I don't see why this is any different. I don't think it'll enhance his career much (if at all) anyway.

Awh Lost is fantastic imo, watched a 3 episode run of it last night for the first time, and was glued to it. Matthew Fox is Hot with a capital H!!!
As for the other side topic of Damo milking it, i agree with Ooooona up there, i don't see the problem! He's only human anyway, maybe he aint driven by money, but how could you ever blame him if he was?? Lets face it, he's hardly a ruthless businessman, and its not as if each and every single person here would do the same.

Cold WAter was played at the beginning of the movie 'The Girl in the Cafe'.

...hmm.
well, all in all, i don't believe that damien deliberately tried to get his music into these shows simply to make more money. he doesn't want money. because that would mean he would have more money than his friends, and he said in an inteview that that sort of thing makes him uncomfortable. i think that the show's people came to damien and asked if they could use this song or that one simply because THEY love his music, and damien likely said something along the lines of "go for it!" he doesn't want money, and certainly not fame. he just writes songs to get his frustration out of him, and since the said frustration comes out into beautifully wocen song, it would be a large form of sin not to share it with people, do you think?
as for lost....i remember the episode mentioned, where - sorry if i'm ruining it but oh well - the large hairy guy (why can't i ever remember names?) had his mp3 and was listening to it at the end of the show and his batteries die. correct? i love LOST. i can't wait for the new season. my dad is addicted to it, it's one of the only shows we don't have to argue over. and anyway, i don't think i would be complaining about any of the publicity damien's geting. i'm not fond of these so-called "fans" that know nothing of damien nor his music either, but i try not to get into it. Damien's the only one who should be able to. Because i love damien for who he really is...a beautiful man, who happens to sing and write songs really well when drunk and frustrated!

"Delicate" has been played on Alias [ep 3.12], Huff and Lost [ep 1.17]; "Cannonbal", on The O.C. [ep 1.17] and The L Word, and "The Blower's Daughter" on Dawson's Creek [ep 6.18]...
I dunno who actually "allows" people to use his songs, but I think that it probably isn't him [considering that he almost went crazy over the cannonball remix]. I agree with you guys: he's no way a sold-off singer. |

if...and thats' a big if, damien is'nt directly saying yes to these songs being allowed, at some stage he has signed over the rights to someone else...(time warner?) and has allowed them to be used...therse nothing wrong with him allowing the songs to be used, its' a disapointment, yes...though, please stop with making excuses for the guy, some big bad wolf is'nt stealing the songs in the night on the off chance damien wont hear them on television.......
