Wheels, google.com is really a fantastic search engine written bu very, very smart people. Next time you have a question like that, just put into google:

"What is an RSS feed" and it will throw up an answer like this.

Works almost without fail. (It's a machine readable file for news syndication that people can automatically pull into their newsreaders or blogs.)

If you put in "5 + 6=" goggle will also tell you it's "11" - really!

For a list of all the genius of google see here

I don't have 11milliseconds spare to use google...

And anyway "It's a machine readable file for news syndication that people can automatically pull into their newsreaders or blogs" doesn't really help me any...

A few links to explain the concept:
<a href="http://www.purplepages.ie/rss/" target="_blank">
http://www.purplepages.ie/rss/</a>
<a href="http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/12/18/dive-into-xml.html" target="_blank">
http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/12/18/dive-into-xml.html
</a>
http://www.webreference.com/authorin...s/xml/rss/intr o/

(this last link is too long and not managed correctly by the forum! Copy
and paste it on your browser and delete the space to visit it)

RSS Feed would let users to display EskimoFriends updates on other
websites, or in special applications called news aggregators. Both
functions are pretty useful in my opinion Edited by: dmbit

You've heard about "blogs", have you? They can be set up to read RSS feeds. It's a text file in a specific format and blog hosts (sites that have software to support and offer "blogging") give you an option to publish an RSS feed (file).

If you decide to do so, you are "syndicating" your writing (this can be news, reviews, political opinions - wjatever) that can be automatically picked up by other blogs. I think once you create a RSS feed you have no control over who grabs it, it is explitely publishing it for all to grab.

There are also news readers now that allow you to subscribe to RSS feeds, so you can pull in your favorite Damien Rice news along with the latest moveon.org news about how to get rid of Bush and your neighbor's blog about how Fifi [not related to our Fifi] is doing.

For instance, google news is a news blog entirely aggregated based on RSS feeds:
http://news.google.com/ There are no human editors involved in creating that page.

Hope that explained it a bit better. If you go to the page I linked to in my last post you can see at the bottom what the RSS format looks like, compared to HTML.

I am sorry, I understand it's a pretty much technical topic, but I also guess
it's harder to explain what a RSS feed is used for, than seeing an actual
use of them!

By the way, this is an annoying bug. You cannot even link another thread
in the forum, because the link is too long. Is there any way to fix it?

I REALLY AM LOST. RSS, PRONOUNCED "RUSSSSSS"?

I CAN TELL YOU ALL 'EXACTLY' WHAT RSS IS.

SIMPLY PUT, ITS THE REPETITION OF SUFFICIANT STANDARDS.I'LL TRY TO BRIEFLY EXPLAIN IT; YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ADD 13 AND 17 BUT FORGET THERE MAY BE AN EXTRA DECIMAL REQUIRED, THERE'S ONLY ABOUT... 16 THOUSAND DIFFERENT TIMES AROUND YOU. TO GET THROUGH THIS CONFUSION, YOU NEED TO ADD THE FIRST THREE OR FOUR NUMBERS, OBVIOUSLEY DIVIDING ALL THE TOTAL NUMBER OF CLOCKS (GIVE OR TAKE ONE OR TWO) AND SUBTRACT THAT FROM YOUR ORIGINAL SUM.

NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG, ADITION ISN'T MY GAME, BUT THAT'S WHAT TOASTERS WERE INVENTED FOR.

IT'S ALL SIMPLE, REALLY

Phonebook removal tool - here I come!

They added a whole bunch of features only recently. Reverse lookup is one of them. I read that in Newsweek, I think. They had a big article on serach engines recently.

They've pissed off a lot of privacy advocates lately. This G-Mail thing got them a lot of bad press.

if they start scanning emails it opens it up for the governments and others to do the same and what not to get access and scan emails, invasion of privacy etc. etc. bad bad

Its not just that but by cross referrencing the information in your cookies they can target advertising at you in an even better way. And the google cookie does not expire until 2038 so that potentially a lot of information for them to harvest.
