Default EskimoFriends Review of "9" Coming Soon (Now up)

I received a promo copy of "9" today. I haven't listened to it yet, but I'll try to have a review up soon.

This thread includes some details of the album, so if you're trying to avoid reading about it before you hear it, then don't read this thread.

It's very difficult to be patient in this situation. Perhaps a nap will help.

what happens when we all reappear after weeks of intense listening?

do we start speculation on the follow-up to "9"

its never to early to speculate

The 3th lp might be coming sooner then we think.

He mentioned that in the press release. Also that he was shying away from touring. It would seem like the logical thing to do though. Because it seems like his wanting to record comes in bursts, so maybe he's just trying to make the best of it.

well... i'll try to write a review tomorrow... but i've listened to it a couple of times now... and i love it... there are some amazing tracks, but the highlight for me is "the animals were gone"... also "coconut skins".

there is no 21 minute track... stuart clark must not have listened to the song... the final track "sleep don't weep" is about 5 minutes long, then there's a short pause, followed by about 15 minutes of weird bell like noise... no idea what that's for...

no hidden tracks

no 9 crimes demo, on this promo copy anyway

as this is a promo, it doesn't have the artwork or album cover yet... it's just a plastic envelope...

The "bell-like" noise is a Tibetan Singing Bowl, I'll wager.

Can I ask you if 'Animals' and 'Sleep' are brand new never-heard-live before tracks?? or renamed old ones??

yeah, it sounds like that tibetan singing bowl... it all makes sense now... wait, no it doesn't... but at least you get to meditate at the end of the album. i thought that's what O was missing...

i hadn't heard Animals or Sleep before... but i haven't kept as up to date on the live recordings as others... i knew all the other songs, just not those two. Sleep Don't Weep is a little like Cold Water in a way...

Animals is the song with the lyrics "I love your depression, I love your double chin" that everyone has been trying to figure out. The song he's played a few times this past summer but no one has a live version of it.

Well... in that case there is a 20 ish minute song he was talking about and thats what Stuart clark was talking about, the one he listened to?

So there is a 21 minute track.

By the way, is there cello at the end of Accidental Babies?

Default Spoiler

Emmett, could you please write *Spoilers* in the title of this thread, so that idiots like me don't go and look and bitterly regret it after? I wish I hadn't read about the tibetan bell thing

I know I should've figured out there'd be spoilers in a thread with the word 'review' in it but like I say, I'm an idiot and my guess is I'm not the only one around here (no offence)

*clears throat* There's also a hidden track at the beginning of the album if you rewind the frist track to like minus 06:66 where the Dalai Lama reads satanical verses backwards. No scheisse, Sherlock.

Mars Volta are pretty bad live. They're a very produced band.

eh, i don't think they are that bad live. i know some people who have seen them live and said it was a good show and these were people who didn't know who they were until they saw them live.

i've also watched many vidoes of them live and i ahve to say, it isn't that bad...

their music just isn't as complicated and technical as on their cds, because you can only do so much on your own when you aren't in the studio.
