A number of people have asked about the Cannonball cover version. Once a writer officially releases a song to the general public, anyone can thereafter, record and release their own cover version of that song without having to ask the writer, as long as the lyrics are unchanged and a few other conditions are met. -damien rice facebook

HAHAHA the blonde exclaiming "What's going on?" at the 1.05 mark is maybe one of the most unintentionally hilarious (and sad) things I've seen in a while (though mostly hilarious). Holy train wreck, Batman!

^ Lol. Yeah that was my "favorite" part.

I have my Copyright Law exam on Friday... have to try and work in this debacle when I inevitably have to talk about exclusive licenses and who can own a copyright

LOL! and kudos to that assumption

i´m listening it for the first time... what i find curious is that the lyrics are still meaningful. so, if anyone had no idea about this song (the original one, i mean), could actually think the lyrics are good.

just read Little Mix's Cannonball is gonna be #1 for sure come Sunday and has a 80% lead on Coldplay's Para-para-para-paradise at #2

the Little Mix version is unlisteneble... maybe the should re-name themselves as Little Sh*t

Midweek Charts: Little Mix's Cannonball firing to top spot
10:53 | Tuesday December 13, 2011
By Paul Williams
Source: MW

Singles

Newly-crowned X Factor champions Little Mix are heading to the top of the UK singles chart this weekend, but their first-day sales are significantly down on those of 2010 champ Matt Cardle.

Their Syco-issued cover of Damien Rice’s Cannonball sold 68,800 copies by the end of business on Monday to put it around 38,000 sales in front of its nearest challenger, according to Official Charts Company data. However, its sales in the week so far are fewer than the lead Cardle commanded day one for his own winner’s single When We Collide a year ago.

Unusually, the X Factor winner’s single has been released two weeks before the Christmas chart, which is announced on December 25 this year, so, although Cannonball looks destined to lead this coming Sunday’s countdown, it will have to hang on another week to be the Christmas number one.

Rice’s original version of Cannonball is heading for a chart return on the back of Little Mix’s cover. Having made the Top 10 for the first time this year after being performed by X Factor contestant John Adams, the Atlantic-handled single returns as the 11th best seller of the week to date.

Damien Rice could earn as much as £200,000 in royalties for X Factor winners Little Mix's cover of his song Cannonball.

[...]An insider told The Sun newspaper: 'If the track sells as well as expected, he will pocket around £200,000 in 12 months' time, before tax. It will be a great earner and an amazing Christmas present for Damien and his family.'

oh my

if they found the last Damo picture that we got from new York, I'm sure they'd made up a story about how Damo was homeless but now he's getting $ again so he's saved from living in the streets

And now I'm jealous all over again of all the people who got to see that. The Frames, Sam Amidon, Thomas Bartlett the Bellies, the Dessner brothers and Damien. Jeesh. That's my idea of heaven, right there. Thanks Marti!

cannonball radio edition is played on today fm now. even though it can´t be compared to the original one, damien found a way to remain its personality.

i still cannot believe that the song was murdered.

Default FWIW just another redundant article

nothing super interesting just saw it and anything Damien at this point makes me curious......and I dont see a problem with this, its not the 1st time a song has been covered and butchered.....This is good for damien....even though fame may not be his thing, fortune is always conforting....sorry if this is already posted, but i didnt see it...and my god I cant believe Damien is 38....

Default Damien Rice back in the charts

another little note:
Quote:
Damien Rice's O has made its way back into the Irish charts for the first time in almost ten years. Rice's song 'Cannonball' was selected by X-Factor to be covered by the eventual winners, Little Mix, earning Rice a huge payday in the process.

However, X-Factor chiefs may be regretting that decision now as the song was the worst selling X-Factor Christmas single in six years.

I'm in the states and have never kept up with X-Factor. My sister and a friend come over and I hear some girl singing Cannonball and figured they were just watching a cover, which confused me because they have no idea who he even is. Turns out it was this.....

It's not my favorite song of his, but it was undeniably butchered. It aggravates me a bit in that sense, but I'm sure he got a pretty nice check and this new exposure could launch him into a financially successful album if he decides to get the ball rolling on recording new material relatively soon. I doubt he cares a whole lot about money or his records going platinum, but I hear he's a quite charitable fella. I hate to say 'win/win' here since we really don't know how the guy feels about this, but this could benefit him, his fans, and various charity organizations. Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here.....I just don't see this as a bad thing, despite how awful the song sounds.

i´m listening to the radio and they just played the cover. i agree with you dawno: "no. just no."

i don´t care about the exposure, the cheque or the future sellings... "just no", imho.
