Learn "wonderwall" and "enter the sandman", go into every guitar shop you can and play them, badly, until told to stop and get out.

Hehe,
I'm not much better, I'm learning chords ok at the moment, and I'm ok with easy chord changes, but when it comes to changing to a barre chord for instance, there's a huge pause while I get my head around where I'm gonna put my fingers then playing continues until the next tricky one, I don't know how well I'm doing, but basically all I've done is go to sites like olga.net and looked for songs I want to learn to play, writing down and practising chords as I went along. I'm now getting to the stage where I can look at someone on tv playing and think hmmmmm they're playing blah-de-blah chord, which my little bro kindly tells me is very sad oh and for the longest while your fingers feel like *%&$%£**% but you soon get used to it hehe

I'm trying to learn to play the guitar...it's uhm...not working. I know where the notes are..but I end up with my fingers tied up...and I don't know sh** about reading tabs, only notes. Someday I will fufill the childhood dream of starting a rock band, it will work for two weeks and then die, but at least i can say I tried.. I also realised that writing music is harder than it looks.

all it takes it practise... and alot of it... you really need to want to pick up a guitar and give it a bash... at the start its horrible when you know nothing and you try to play a chord and it sounds like a donkey squelling but it will get better... i started guitar when i was 11 and played (badly) for 2 months and packed it in cos it was too much effort... picked it back up about 2 years ago and ive gotten pretty handy with it now but im still beyond playing the F chord properly... my hand just doesnt bend like other peoples

My big tip would be make sure you get a good hand position when holding chords. If it starts to hurt in any way (your hand, not fingertips - as this will happen in the beginning) stop immediately.
I got addicted to guitar. I played it every spare second I had at home, for hours each day. It just kept me captivated. I overdid it though and ignored pains. As a result I have RSI in my left hand and have to severely cut back on my guitar playing. I really shouldn't be playing at all, but I can manage it in little bits. |

My advice is take your time, enjoy it and learn song that you like. Some of those guitar books teach you really sh*t songs.

I always say to people that you can't go wrong with an Oasis chord book. Although when you get much better, you'll take much joy out of throwing it out the window.

It's very common from guitar, but people just take the warnings too casually. I can play for about 20 to 30 mins and then it's start to feel tense and hurt. I stop then. Occasionally I get carried away and play for 2 or 3 hours. I then leave the guitar for a week or two because my hand feels pretty tense for that period. Some barre chords and heavy hammer-ons tend to wear me quicker, so sometimes I'll skip some songs if I'm trying to play for longer. |
