the Fool appreciation thread
because it's so good it deserves all its many threads
i just love this song too much so i was ecstatic when i read that he had played it in mexico. hopefully he'll tour again with vyv and the guys so he'll add the full-band version i wonder how many versions of this song are out there. these are the only ones i have in my computer: 2002-01-31 Vicar St., Dublin 2003-11-21 Cane's - Mission Beach (San Diego), CA 2004-02-24 Le Grand Mix,Tourcoing, France 2004-03-12 Saschall Theater - Firenze (Florence), Italy 2007-03-05 Lille, France are there any more?

Can't answer the question as to how many times he has played it, but...I agree it's a great song. My second favorite of his. Insane is first. Sand is probably third, but it changes.

^More or less same here, prob in my top 3 together with Insane & I Remember. I loooooooove this song so much, I've heard it live once last summer in Reykjavik, he opened the gig with Fool and almost died...
wish we had a studio version or a high quality live version but it's a song that I imagine would be difficult to make a studio version of it, not sure if it would translate well... My fav live version is this one from Paris Olympia during the 9 tour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PSTsvSvTk2I I also have another version that I loooooove as mp3, but no clue where it's from...it's a version someone posted here once in which first he does a bit of Cohen's Famous Blue Raincoat and then goes into Fool.

Born,
I think you meant to link to the full length(albeit misnamed) performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSMc0...eature=related

i'm not mad about this song, it sounds too much like ne me quitte pas by jacques brel. i mean, damien's upfront about it being inspired by his song but it's too close to the original for me... *ducks to avoid beercan thrown by cali* |

do you reckon that he has not released it because it is indeed (too) similar to the Jacques Brel song?? I've always wondered...

By that logic he'd never be able to release "Baby Sister" since it's a direct musical lift of "Famous Blue Raincoat"...

I don't see the Baby Sister/ Famous Blue Raincoat connection either. Will have to listen again.

It's not a copy exactly, and I do think Baby Sister is a great song in it's own right, but the inspiration seems to be very close!
Just like Insane and Creep.

Ok here is Paris-Olympia 04 July 07, prob the best Fool
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J8YQV7EM the other Paris (19 March 07) is not the best quality in the sense that is kinda low, y'all judge: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4TWKVD73 And then Galways is not the best quality either but might be interesting cos I think it's the oldest (2001) one, there is a like a background static... http://www.megaupload.com/?d=G3NHH5IY

...or like 'Groovin' and 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' by Nina Simone...does anyone sea the similarity in that one?

Oh, I wouldn't be able to say anything about Baby Sister and Famous Blue Raincoat from a music theoretical point of view, but I do hear the similarities, yeah.
By the way, Baby Sister is probably one of my favourites from Damien. Tangent. Does anyone else hear something familiar in I Remember? If one uses the studio version as a reference, it's the guitar part that goes into "come all ye lost, dive into moss". This sounds so familiar to me but I cannot put my finger on it!

here´s an excellent sound quality and sort of acustic version i´ve just found:
i like the background: a couple "dancing tango" (it is what it seems, at least)

I hate the background cheezy karaoke image but need to thank you. This is far and away the best version of "Fool" I've ever heard and I didn't know it existed til now.

i´m glad and you´re welcome
the background is cheesy indeed, but i like the idea of related, in a senseless way of course , fool to tango, since i´m argentinian and specifically from buenos aires: the city of tango, lol.

yes, that is the best sound quality version of Fool, the mp3 has been floating around for a while,
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=J4U92YHE ^^^but it's not from that gig in Philly in which he played Famous Blue Rainocat in full, he didn't do Fool at that gig, after FBR he did The Blower's Daughter...
