Default Cardiff - Last Gig, Phenomenal!

I am so glad Hollie and I went on a whim!
Will post more later, must shower (or Hollie will) but was phenomenal!
New song as well. Called "Stone", very very good.

Oh goodness me, I didn't think Plymouth could be topped, but this was certainly on par.

In was fantastic, absolutely brilliant, and over 2 and a half hours... He was in, imo, the perfect mood - chatty enough to be telling funny little tales, but also nostalgic and 'damien' enough to play songs that you only get to hear when he's in one of 'those' moods.

And, to top the evening off, Rob and I were lucky enough to speak with Damo for 10 minutes or so after the gig. I asked him about the radio incident with the blower's daughter/no surprises mix, and he said he remembered it, I told him it was me, and he looked chuffed and complimented my guitar playing, which has absolutely made my year. He said he preferred No Surprises as a song, which I said was very modest and that they were on par for me, which is why I mixed them

Also asked him how long a break he was planning on taking, and he said he wasn't sure, he was just going to travel the world with a backpack rather than lorries and buses and a 150 strong entourage. Which sounds lovely. I jokingly said 'so about 5 years then eh?' and he chuckled, knowing what I was referring to... hehe.

Asked him what the new song he played was called, to which he replied 'Stone.' It was very similar to Baby Sister. I'm kicking myself for not asking him what beast and beauty, you shouldn't be here, and what the night is for are actually called, because of course that's just what we're calling them... But sorry guys I totally forgot.

I told him he's a great inspiration and everything and he thanked me which was lovely.

Anyways, all in all it was one of the best evenings of my life - Rob and I were on such a high afterwards that we just had to go away and get very drunk, and ramble all night about what an amazing musician he is.

Score!

Hollie you so lucky!!!!! Glad you talked with him... now he won't forget about you!!! We told you his comments were to the original song rather than his version, but I guess now you'll be more relieved

Can't wait to hear Stone!!! Was it on guitar??? or piano??? you remember more lyrics????

But the Beast & Beauty title is confirmed. What was wrong was Where Do You Go to Pretend. And he also said recently (US tour) that What This Night is For does not have a final title yet... No clue about You shouldn't be There...

It was on guitar, it really was uncannily similar to baby sister guitar wise. I just can't remember any lyrics expect "She can swim between my islands" and "She has legs as strong as islands" - as he was singing it I was thinking remember the lyrics remember the lyrics... but I just can't!

The whole band played though, so they'd obviously been shown it.

^that list wouldn't end. she'd be there talking to him all night (which isn't a bad thing" hehe) but she'd be bringing a book home full with the questions and answers... (and that wouldn't be bad either! ) (after giving thought to it some more.. i doubt he'd even answer them. lol.)

Great review hollie.. gah.. i want your life.... lol. ugh.. i don't know what to say (again), but i'm super, super jealous! and that i can't wait to hear stone!!!!!

Yeah - there's so much I could have asked and I could have stayed there talking to him all night!! But he and the others were having an after party, so we said we'd let him get on.

Nope didn't meet any other Eskimos at this one unfortunately, though I know there were some there. Also haven't heard any mention of a recording, but I'm really really hoping something will show up...

I'd love to re-live it all.

Oh, and Vyv was great too, of course.

Hi,
I just god back from my frip to Cardiff. The concert was just amazing. It was the best I've ever seen !!! He played a whole bunch of unrealised songs, but I guess you all know that already, so I m just telling you about the other things. I didn't like the venue al all and I had really bad seats...and the audience, at least where I was sitting was pretty wired.
I was glad the he invited everyone to the come to the stage and dance when he played Coconut Skins!!! But still it was the best gig I've ever been to.

Nine/Holly: You did kind of meet an eskimo, me!!! I was waiting for Damien after the gig with my friend. Do you remember the two girls standing next to you and your friend? I was the one with the brown hair, my friend is the one with blond hair, who was standing next to you...I didn't know that it was you...I wish I would have know!!! We could have talked....

But, yeah Damien was great!!! It was my first time seeing him. Me and my friend talk with him for a while about travelling and what we are doing ... It was awesome!!! He was so nice!!
Ok, now the best part for you all!! Me and my friend recorded some songs from the concert!!! We recorded the new song!!!, You shouldn't be here, Beast and Beauty (it has some new lyrics, I think), and I think one other...my frined has most of them still on her camera, but I 'm trying to post them as soon as possible! I don't know how the qualita turned out...maybe someone has to help me fix it a little... (I only recorded the audio,no video, because I didn't want to hold the camera all the time...I wanted to enjoy the concert as much as possible)
Oh and I recorded a little bit of what he was talking about the whole tour and Lisa and Tomo leaving... I will post the first songs and the talking tomorrow!!!
I also recorded Vivienne's whole show! It was really good too!!! Unfortunatly during the show a man came and asked me for my ticket and I had to look for it...I think the recording is a little mest up at that part, but I haven't actually listen to it yet, so I don't know how it turned out..
I actually wanted to record the whole Damien concert, but my stupid camera is eating my batteries and so, after I reacorded Vyvienne's concert the batteries that I had just put in my camera were already dead, so I changed them. But I didn't have anymore batteries with me so I dicided to record just a couple of songs.
I hope someone was able to record the whole gig! I want to here it again!!!
I'm still so excited when I think about that night!I was definatly worth all that stupid money I paid for the trip!!
I'm just really sad that it probably was the last time seeing him for a long time I guess...

One thing I hate when I go to Damo gigs and i don't know if it is just me that notices it there are 3 groups of people -

1) People who are not really interested in Damien and want to be heard and noticed - Two examples -

Cardiff gig - Couple sat in front think the guy was drunk and was not very pleasant, think the girlfriend got pissed with him and so stormed out while he sat there texting on his phone not paying any attention to the gig itself. Later saw them arguing outside felt very sorry for the woman.

Also some girl was singing REALLY loud during cannonball unplugged, each to their own and its nice when people sing quietly to this song but hers was more of a screech/shouting.

Bristol - Group of blokes who were "Irish" who just heckled through half the show when Damien was speaking to the crowd.

2) The high and mighty group.

OK I guess I sound like one of them after the above rant but the high and mighty group are fairly clear. Two girls sat near us during the show did nothing but tut and moan about people around them "Who were not real fans" apparently and then proceeded to do exactly the same to those who they were tutting at.

3) The rest - Which I think I would class myself in tend to just ignore people around me although the above two examples are hard to ignore and just want to enjoy the gig.

Overall though what a gig Damo was on to form and I would do anything to get my hands on a recording of the gig. I half hoped the screens etc were being done for a DVD release but i know that was a long shot.

Only my second Damien Rice gig and hopefully he will be back soon as this one went so quick compared to the Bristol gig I could not believe it was over when it was. I found Un-played Piano very touching indeed and was delighted with Rat in the Grain, was great when Damien invited us to the front to he was on top form.

You can't really hear it in the recording, but live it sounded like he was singing 'She left him before/ the moon was full/for she knew he's poor' I'm pretty sure that was what he was singing...

it's pull! "She knew his pull" rhymes with full. I really reeeally wanted it to be "She new his porn." That would have been an amazing line, but it's ok because now I can steal it!

Caitlin, thanks very much for the nice words about the mix thingy, I'm glad you enjoyed it

Sorry you had trouble with the crowd This has got to die, but glad you enjoyed yourself!

And Caitlin, you should also check out Hollie's cover of Insane....it is so incredible!!

And thank you Ronjagirl ! You Shouldn't Be Here sounds really good, and and I love how Damien sings more intensely near the end of Beast and Beauty! And about the new lyrics, yeah I think Hollie is right, I think it's "pull", as in attraction.

Hi all. I've posted here a couple of times but can't remember my old login so had to wait for verification before posting about the Cardiff gig.

It was superb
