So what you have is an album that lasts four whole minutes?

i'm still taking it in on my own terms (as bumpman so eloquently put it) so i'm not really prepared to talk a lot about it yet, but i can already say i adore it.. i didn't expect to because i thought it was too much to ask for a comparable follow up to O, kind of like asking van gogh to paint another starry night.. but so far what i hear are eerily beautiful arrangements, songs that have a distinct theme if you listen (not just thrown together at all) and especially in the new songs, a gentleness and maturity that i haven't heard expressed quite that way in damien's songwriting before personally i couldn't be happier |

and yes...yes.. I'm so childish A little bit wildish With my rumdiddlyumdiddlyumdiddly I'm so deep Well I'm so garish A little unfairish The way I pick you up And drop you in a heap I'm so unfaithful In fact I'm a plateful I won't kiss her But I'll stare her up all night I'm a stormy little singer An unstable little swinger If you're coming Come prepared for a fight Well I'm so childish A little bit wildish With my rumdiddlyumdiddlyumdiddly I'm so deep Well I'm so uncaring Do far too much swearing And if you read through my behaviour You'll find I'm a creep I'll play a stormer Yet in the corner I'll be grumpy on my own Like I don't care I'm a stormy little singer An unstable little swinger With a big rip In the arsehole of my flares Well I'm so childish A little bit wildish With my rumdiddlyumdiddlyumdiddly I'm so mad I'm so truthful A little bit bruteful But in sooth I know not Why I am so sad I try my bestest Well as far the restest Well it's just stuff that comes out wrong And gets misunderstood I'm a dandy little dreamer A doctored misdemeanour A didactic destiny schemer Bare with me if you would (trumpets) Boo!-urns

HBH... I like the way you still managed to get a Ha in at the end of you're 'i'm so childish' post... Classy. 4 wisdom teeth... Ouch. And Carvin... I hope you weren't implying that I'm one of the ones who's been saying stupid things in this thread.

9 crimes is maybe my initial favorite song on '9'. not the most listened too... i find myself turning off the lights and listening to 'mmy&I' and just jamming out with air guitar and all. it gets me so pumped. never gets old. not even after the years i've heard it.
and i don't see any of these songs having commercial...or moreso radio success here in the U.S. None of it is poppy enough, and its not hard enough for the alternative stations. I see it being the same as 'O' in its success in that tv appearances, word of mouth, the more alternative approaches to marketing this album. can any of you U.S.'ers see Rootless Tree being popular as a single? I love the song, but can't see it. |

You make a good point... But you'd surprised... I'm not from the US but once the **** has been edited out of the song it could be a radio hit. I remember Wired to the ****in Moon by an Irish band being a hit on radio over here. i realise America is a lot different but... Who knows? It could become a hit. Only time will tell.

Lol. Yeah. I know that American radio is a lot more categorised, but, to what extent? Maybe you could request Damien?

I hadn't heard anything, not even the single before Friday when I picked up the album. I've only had time to listen to about twice and my initial reaction was "this isn't all that great."
4 songs that I really like, Elephant is a real let down compared to how good it sounds live and there are a couple of songs I really don't like at all.

Keep listening Ian,
As someone else put it earlier this record isn't as immediately devastating as "O" on first (few) listens but it definitely grows better each time you revisit it. My initial gripes with some of the recording choices are already lessening substantially due to the overall stellar quality of the songs themselves and their not as obvious cohesion as a whole. There's often a process involved before becoming that much more familiar with the songs on such different terms. The emotion is mostly all still there but it's just usually being expressed far more subtly than in the live tracks.
