Went thinking we would give him the benefit of the doubt after February's fiasco. Last night clinched it. Forgive me if I sound harsh, but it was truly rubbish. He forgot his words, did the same-old same-old looping, knelt on the stage (as if expecting to ascend like Jesus himself because he's just that great...), looked astoundingly smug during Childish (he's thinking - *this is actually about me and what I truly am, and you all love me for it, you fools muhahahahahahahaha*), pilfered Glen's muff pedal by the sound of it, left me with a throat like a badger's arse from all the incense, and the people at the back doing Lisa's part during Volcano? CRINGE. (If you were one, ta, we at least got a chuckle about it...)
Nigh on 30 euros wasted. Probably should have gone to Lucas instead. Ah well, we'll make the right decision next time. I'm glad some of you enjoyed it though. Different horses for different courses I guess. Vent over.

If I was his manager I would say stop touring, put out a album or two and make yourself "fresh", and put "O" on the backshelf. Thats why I get such a kick out of Ryan Adams. While the guy sometimes takes turns I don't get, he always remains inspired to me and he takes a RISK. Damien could learn a thing or two from RA if he wants to continue to do what he does. |

i totally agree i just couldnt believe him getting down on his knees for amie...i was so cringing for him...really embarrasing the majority of people there would have seen him pull that one before...its so obviously rehearsed..rehearsed to death...i was praying he'd resist doing it..but oh course he did... i was also real pissed off that he wouldnt talk for about 30 mins... i kept praying at the end of each song that he would at least say how are ya???by the time he did say something i felt it was too late and for me the damage had been done... the bottom line damo would not be where he is...enjoying the adventure of touring the world if it wasnt for us buying overpriced ticket bastard concert tickets and cds.. that has to be acknowledged and automatically the audience..i dont understand how performers dont get this or overlook what is basically manners and a bit of gratitude i did enjoy the gig at the end of the day...some really good bits apart from the toffeepop lisa wannabe girls but alothough its tempting to keep going along cause the songs are so nice im goiing to have to stop myself and miss a few gigs untill things freshen up and he reinvents his act.. ive seen him 3 times and i think ive heard all his crop of stories at this stage.. does anyone understand what i mean..??? |

to be good at something (which Damo is) you have to be slightly musically up yourself!

They were really good, getting better everytime I see them, last time I saw them in the Sugar Club I thought they were lacking the oomph that Lisa gave them on some of the songs when she sang with them at Whelans but last night I didn't miss her. Single is out in Tower and Road Records this week.

forgive me
but i have heard the likes of this before an artist suddenly becomes famous and starts to sell more records and all of sudden its time to bash him/her i think his stories were kinda cool and when he got going he did loads of talking so i thought that was great too he probably talked more to the audience than any other gig i have been at(and i have been at quite a few) |

Im sorry to hear you thought it was that bad Geoff. Your right Feburary was a mini disaster, but i cant see where this negativity is justified here. But as you say.."horses...etc"</span> Quote:
I think everyone would agree with you, but that doesnt mean that his performance was below par. If you've seen it all before, and dont want to see it again, Im not being cheeky, but dont go.</span> Quote:
Each to their own........ but to be honest, i think that is a little bit over the top. I've seen him perform before, and never thought that was embarrasing. I dont know why you would think that. Out of the previous times i've seen him, which has only been 4 or 5, i thought it was the best. I thought it was very professional, and that he put alot of effort and emotion into every song.</span><br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> <br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> <br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> I didnt think his use of the pedal and distortion was overused, and maybe because i've seen less of the Frames live than Damo, i never once thought anything of him steeling Glen's "thing". I actually thought that his use of the available equiptment was fantastic. One man and a guitar.</span><br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> <br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> I can accept there are fans who feel there is a certain amount of monotony, regarding his gigs lately. But we all know thats because of the album's age, and yes i feel the second album is long over due. But i dont understand why fans are going to these gigs with this negative attitude. Cringing, while waiting for him to do something, or being annoyed that his hasnt done something else.</span><br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> <br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> I saw a brilliant performance from an artrist on top of his game, in a great atmosphere (excluding those Toffee Pop girls). I left totally satisfied with his performance, and am surprised at these comments.</span><br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> <br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> Basically, i think that if you've these negative thoughts before going to a gig, why go??</span> Quote:
There are plenty of artists that perform the first few songs before saying a word. I certainly dont view it as not respecting your audience. I think it all play's a part in setting the right atmosphere. Have you never seen a band play, when after a few songs, the lead singer will stop and start to talk to the crowd? Or introduce the band members etc? I have. Thinking of U2, the Chili's. Coldplay to name just a few. I thought he showed alot of appreciation for the crowd, (who gave him two standing ovations btw).</span><br style="color: rgb(0, 0, 255);"> There are certain artists, were there comes a time that you know that this is them at their peak. And its those times that you need to sit back and appreciate what your witnessing, and be glad to be there. (*Hope that doenst sound too cheesy*)</span> Edited by: daol20

Damojust enjoys writing and performing songs that for some reason people like. His attitude is, if you wanna come and listen - great, if you don't like it that's fine too. He has never portrayed himself to be an entertainer. He has said before that he feels perfectly comfortable playing on stage but not talking to(interacting with) the audience. I'd say from his touring he's found a few different stories that seem to go well and he feels comfortable sticking with them. It's not his fault that us sad bastards have downloaded every live gig we could get our hands on so we've heard it all before! All I'm trying to say is, he writes, he sings, he plays. don't "expect" anything else.

well said banjaxed i totally agree, the bootlegs are good but they do give you somewhat of a pattern of his gigs therefore leaving out excitiment of a Damo gig as much.

I totally agree with this, Banjaxed. When I saw him in Madison (and he was a bit moody that night-- right before he shaved his head) he seemed almost annoyed when people would recognize some of his songs that hadn't been released. He started in on "Childish" and I sort of let out a "wooo!" (couldn't help it ) and he sort of stopped and half-laughed in an exasperated kind of way. Then after performing some new material he even said "Well there's a few you haven't heard before!" I think that's why DRM came out with the "official" policy that they do not support the recording and trading of Damien's music (whatever Mario) because Damien wants to present it himself in his own way and how can he be fresh when we've all already downloaded and shared most of the next CD?? Sorry Damien! We're insatiable! And yes I agree Angela-- very well said Daragh!! |

Damien has overdone it for me and thats the reason why i didnt go to the gig last week and the one in november... i stupidly bought a ticket for the february gig thinking "havent seen him in a while so should be good" but was let down again... the music was there but the feeling just wasnt.... i agree with alot of what funky avacado said and i do think damien should be evolving as an artist without sticking to his album so tight and the same "lets get drunk during cheers darling"... i went to the olympia 3 nights in a row in 2002 and by the end of it i was cringing each time he did the skit.. it looked to me like it was a total set up because he did the exact same things/said the same things/ acted the same way slurring his words and pretending to be a drunken arse... but it was good entertainment (just dont over-do it is all im saying) not having a bitch here but just my views on damien at the moment... will definately not be seeing him till he pulls the finger out and gets a new setlist

That's what you said after the last gig, and then you complained about not being able to go to this one. Can't find the reference on this board, but here's what you say on the Irish Music Central forum (about Glen Hansard's concert in June) "what a bad time to be broke... first damo now this" If you want to bitch about Damien's live performances, try to play as many gigs as him andbe creative everytime... and stop contradicting yourself!

Amen! I've seen Damo three times now and all 3 times were actually totally different. The last time (February)was the best gig I've ever been to!He played every single song from O and I was happy about that and he played some non-album track (Rootless Tree, Tongue, Woman Like A Man) that totally RAWKED!!! He was on a roll that night (and in a great mood)!

In fairness, we're all on this message board because we really like Damien's music, but there's a time for everyone when they have to step away from something they really like so that they can come back to it later and appreciate it fully again. criticisms are healthy, but we havea responsibility not to go over the top too. everything in moderation people.
