Im new to all this ftp malarkey andI just downloaded smartFTP v1.0, in order to get on the damienrice.serveftp.net thing. It accepted the username and password but then came up with:

550-Could not reach you. Are you behind a firewall or router? (Try using PASV mode to connect.)

550 Could not build data connection to host (82.32.90.168:2198 was unreachable).

I turned off my firewall (Sygate Personal Firewall 5.5); 'passive mode' was already on and tried again but the samehappened. Any ideas?

1. Tools > Settings > Connection > Data Connection -> "Passive Mode / Active Mode".
2. Click the "PASV" button on the toolbar, when connected to a server. (session saved only)
3. Favorites > Edit Favorites > Properties > Connection > Data Connection -> "Mode".
4. Commands > Connection -> "Passive Mode". (session saved only)

I know you said you tried this but just check it again, I had the same issue. Try changing it and then closing Smart FTP and check to see if its still in Passive Mode.
