I would never have clumped the two together.
I love both of them but for very different reasons. The only two similarity's i can see between the style of Damien and Ray is that they are indeed both solo artists with an acoustic guitar (a rare breed I hear..) and they both as almost brutally honest in some of there songs but Damien's honesty about well... "paper mache" is different from Ray's honesty of "Big Bonned-Woman"

Both use there music to tell a story. Damien usually of heart break and Ray, in his earlier stuff atleast of his hard life. Ray to me although still intense at times seems to me to have a more lighthearted side to him than Damien.

from the news page...
lovely!
I can not wait to see this. Ray has been doing this song on tour, here is a video if you care to watch. Unfortunately without Damien, but I dare anyone to say this performance is anything short of beautiful.

I am having a hard time believing that this collaborative performance actually occurred...I was always under the assumption that the sky would fall if they shared the same stage. Can't wait to see it.

@GoodCat, I favor and support nearly every word of your Ramien comparison.

haha I couldn't have said it better myself. Which is why I am traveling to Berlin to see Damien, in the hopes that Ray will come on stage for just one song. If the earth ended right after that concert, I would die happy

Meh he has a nice voice but he doesn't have much of a range. (Ray that is)

I've yet to hear it "soar".

Haven't bothered to get the 2nd album yet but I can't think of anything vocally stretching on Trouble. Most of the melodys afaik don't stray much outside an octave. Of course I could be forgetting something...

Anyway I'm not saying you need a 4 1/2 octave range to be a great singer... and I hate dissecting musicians like this (I actually quite like Ray), I just think his voice doesn't hold a candle to Damien's.

So back to the topic at hand, who would win in a Damien Rice v. Ray LaMontagne joust?

Sir, yes sir! (well actually it'll have to wait it's turn - I have plenty of albums waiting that I really should get around to buying)

Anyway my original point wasn't just neccesarily about his range of notes, I think Damien's voice is far more nuanced and emotive. But whatever, to each their own...

And don't get me started on Emmett Tinley!*

Ray holds the joust as strong as he holds his ax while cutting trees in the forest.

@Closing_Doors: "Haven't bothered to get the 2nd album yet but I can't think of anything vocally stretching on Trouble. Most of the melodys afaik don't stray much outside an octave. Of course I could be forgetting something..."

Please, please, please get a flac player (MusikCube), download a recent live Ray concert (i.e. 11.28.06) and reassess his vocal range. If his voice doesn't make your chest tighten, I will be surprised.

Ramien should have a voice off in Deutschland.

Cheers Everyone,

Dear Closing Doors, Don't Hold The Candle So Tightly Or Your Fur Might Burn. As Oscar Wilde Said: "i Have Nothing To Declare But My Billiance!" Both Ray And Damien Fill That Bill Equally, I Think We All Agree This Isn't A Pagent, Yet Please Gather All The Correct Information Before Commenting On Something You Haven't Heard, I.e. "ray's 2nd Album". You Seem Articulate And Were Correct When You Stated Musicians Shouldn't Be Disected, You Might Want To Also Check Out Ray's 3 Albums That He Recorded Before Trouble When He Was Unsigned.

Ray And Damien Complent Each Other So Well That We Don't Need To Be Reminded That There Is Indeed A God. If These Two Choice Artisits Were To Much A Like We Wouldn't Enjoy Or Appreciate Why Each Is So Dynamically So Powerful, Beautiful. I Really Enjoy Everyone's Take And Respect Everyones Opinion. But I Couldn't Agree More With Mr Benn, Cille, Mattien And Good Cat Gone Bad.

Thanks,
Remember I

I wouldn't like to be without either artists and taste is very personal, so no real point in an A 'V' B type discussion...

I am really pleased about Ray joining Damo on tour as I have tickets for the Berlin show and can't wait!

Ha ha! Cille doesn't know what Jousting is... pretty soon she's going to have to start wearing a helmet.

See if you can beat my high score, I'm still at numbers 2 and 3 in their all-time champions list!

same here However, if there was someone I had to choose to put on my really tall Damien pedastal aswell, it would be Ray.

Then Fionn

I think Ray is a fantastic lyricist, and he has a mesmerising voice. But for me, nothing at all will ever compare to Damien.

Just like Lost - Desperate Housewives is excellent fun, i adore it - but nothing will ever beat Lost!

ah see I'm the other way round. Whilst the wait for 9 was angonising and frusrtrating, I would much rather an Artist took all the time they felt they needed to get a release exactly how they wanted it, rather than rushing it for the sake of the public (dont get me wrong I'm not at all saying that that is what Ray did or does) - and it not being perfect in the eyes of the artist.

If Damien felt that's how long he needed, then i'm cool. Frustrated, but cool. lol

Till the sun turns back is pretty damn polished though. It flows from track to track like a river. I think it's just a different process they go through, Damien comes across as a bit of a perfectionist to me which isn't entirely a bad thing it just means you get time to recover before he blows you away again.
