What makes you feel like a woman? Or like a man? For me it will have to be the click-click of my shoes when I wear high-heels... And driving. Driving always made me feel very womanly.

Yes there is! Dancing sensually (with your hips, like belly dencing for instance), walking with your hair in the wind... etc.

ah joy gender stereotyping I once attended this seminar on gender run by this woman Kate Bornstein, who was born a man but is now a fabulous lesbian woman with great leather boots. She made us all take this quiz on what made us a "real" woman or a "real" man. It was awesome. She has this book you should all check out called My Gender Workbook. It talks a lot about questioning those things that make someone a "real man" or a "real woman." I think the quiz is in there. She also has a great book called Gender Outlaw. This also reminds me of that song "Real Men." I forget who sang it originally, but Tori Amos did a cover of it on Strange Little Girls. I just feel like me. Whether the things that make me feel like me are considered masculine or feminine, I don't really care. |

I agree with you... And this has gone a bit off topic, although it's probably my fault, I wasn't clear enough at the start. My question was not what made ppl feel likea real woman or man, but what made them feel like a woman or man at a particular moment. For instance, as you could see,I said driving made me feel like a woman, and that's not one of the stereotypes, is it? Of course everyone should feel like themselves before feeling part of a gender... My question started with my younger brother saying that shaving made him feel like a man. Anyway... This woman sounds interesting Valerie.

I took it as meaning things you do that make you feel feminine and like a grown up not a child anymore, therefore like a woman, right? Edited by: jbalogh

Yes jbalogh, but how does wearing pink lipstick make you feel like a woman as opposed to a girl? I wore pink lipstick as a girl. I wear makeup now because it's part of who I am (at the moment). I'm free to do so without being ridiculed because it is expected that women, not men, wear makeup. But it's not that way in every culture. In some places, putting stuff on your lips is just meant to keep your lips from getting chapped. In others it's used for ceremonies of all kinds. It's easy to see how this turned into a discussion about gender, because the topic wasn't "Like an adult." It asked what makes you feel like a man or a woman. Gender-identified answers were bound to result. I am fascinated by the topic, which is why I like the song Woman Like A Man. I think that it's very old-fashioned to say that a woman who wants "to get boned" is "like a man." I think that when we start saying that certain traits or desires make one "like a woman" or "like a man," we are being unnecessarily divisive. But that's my opinion, and I have no intention of putting down other people's opinions - I'm just consantly questioning things, and I'd like to think that other people are, too. What makes me feel like a woman is when I am harrassed by men on the street. What makes them feel that they have the right to stare at me or say offensive things to me, I will never know. I like ali's list mostly because I find it interesting that those non-gender-specific things make her feel like a woman. Most of my guy friends do those things, except for the stilletto bit.I think wearing heels is an exercise in torture that screws up your knees, your ankles and your back. Real men wear skirts |

Well for me putting on lipstick or getting dressed up to go out does make me feel like a woman. I am a yoga teacher and I don't wear makeup all day.. So when I am all dressed up and put some lipstick on, pretty lingerie.. I feel more like a woman. I wanted to add that reference to pink lipstick means nothing more than my favorite color at the moment.. But I wasn't really looking to deep, alot of it is the physical things I do to feel more (feminine) really.Plus that is such a small thing I do in the scope of my life. Also I should say this is just how I feel personally, I know every woman has a different view, and I completely respect that. Of course there are much deeper things to ponder on this subject... But with all that said, I am a woman, so no matter what I look like or am doing at the time should make me feel like a woman right? No rules for that. By the way I agreed with almost everything you mentioned in your post, this would be a great conversation to have over dinner and wine..cheers Edited by: jbalogh
