San Francisco Show
Just got to the show. Looks like there's no backing band or string section. Maybe one chello. The temple is beautiful! Let you know what he plays..

judging from a couple pics I found on twitter, it looks like he's solo...but there might be a piano on stage for him to switch to.

@MusicSF: "I blame everything on sperm," Damien Rice's first line as I walk into his show at Sherith Israel.

Good show tonight in SF. Some info (spoilers included)
- setting (Jewish temple in the city) was absolutely stunning. - it was him and only him (well, almost, see further down), either in guitar or on piano. - he opened with Eskimo, with no mic or amp. - he confirmed the album was coming out (and was relieved he could actually say that, now). - he played only one song off (I guess) the new album, The Greatest Bastard. The fact we only got "old songs" + one new one was quite confusing to me. If there's a new album, there must be songs on them so why not play a few? - Volcanoes was one of the best parts of the show as he got approx. 40-50 people on stage to do the backing vocals and got the rest of the crowd to join in as well. - he did his (usual?) schtick on Cheers Darlin. With someone from the audience, they downed a bottle of red wine in just a couple minutes before he started the song. Overall a really good 2-hour show with all of the classics, my slight disappointment being that I felt I had seen a lot of it before and was hoping for more of the new songs... |

Yes. It was confusing indeed. He was pretty funny throughout. He also asked if anyone had a request. Of course, there were plenty but he settled on Grey Room, which was pretty nice.

do you remember the setlist? Aidin Vaziri @MusicSF 2h2 hours ago Here's a blurry picture of Damien Rice singing "When Doves Cry" with half the people from the audience on stage. Maybe we won't get to hear them until the album has actually landed. He must be worried about youtube or ruining the surprise or something!

from cardifan on www.reddit.com/r/DamienRice
He came on a little after 8 and played until around 10:30. I saw a schedule before hand that 10:30 was the curfew time and when I was up on stage, noticed that he had a clock at his feet with the current time. Didn't see any set lists. I did grab a pick when I was walking off. He only played Greatest Bastard off of the new album. Talked about how it's about ****ing up so badly you have to just laugh. He was solo. Guitar and piano. Got a woman drunk during Cheers Darlin'. They went through nearly two bottles of wine during the song. Afterwards she mentioned that it was the first time she'd ever had alcohol. I'm in a fog right now it was all so incredible for me. The crowd was so gracious. It was just really great. Last edited by Shillelagh; 10-08-2014 at 06:45 AM. |

Ok, songs he played (order not exactly right):
- Eskimo - Delicate - Elephant - Woman Like A Man - Grey Room - Rootless Tree - I Remember - The Greatest Bastard - The Professor + La Fille Danse - 9 Crimes - Volcanoes (to which he added portions of Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and When Doves Cry) - The Blower's Daughter - Cheers Darlin - Accidental Babies - Cannonball |

Very disappointing setlist... Why would you go on tour to promote a new album and then play the same old songs? |

Very disappointing indeed. This setlist actually makes me feel a whole lot less excited for the Amsterdam show.

I hope that this old setlist is merely one he is very comfortable with and he can now began to tweak and develop it. This is his chance to play new material, cover new songs and tell new stories.

Maybe he's getting too old and set in his ways. Or he was suffering from severe jet lag and forgot about the new songs

pretty sure he won´t play the newies til the album is out, Damo is old school and has the paranoia about unreleased making it to youtube... he should learn from Ben Howard who´s playing the whole forthcoming new album in full and no oldies at all

Maybe I'm just a bit spoiled as I've seen him perform several times, but if the setlists stay this way I am seriously considering selling my own tickets. I'd rather wait for him to do a tour with new material. And a band.

If you decide to sell your ticket(s) for Amsterdam, I'm interested
But maybe wait and see. The playlist might evolve during the tour... |

Same for me - if you consider selling your A'dam tickets, I'm more than interested. I've never seen him live before so I'm beyond excited, regardless of the songs he'll play. I currently have tickets for row 6 on the balcony so given that you've got row 4 tickets, I'd be more than happy to sell my own and buy yours, haha.

Since I haven't seen him since 2007 it'll be nice to see a best of show with a new song or two thrown in. I'm site when he comes back through he'll be playing mostly new songs so this is really the best of both worlds.
