I heard something on npr about this pancake day, but I don't really know what it is, never heard of pancake day before. As far as I'm concerned, today was Mardi Gras.

Though I do like pancakes, butter and maple syrup is the best kind, and maybe with some warm baked apples on top, sprinkle of cinnamon

oh god i dont want to answer that for fear that i'll get it monumentally wrong, but i'll give it a go.
pancake tuesday is the day before ash wednesday and ash wednesday is the first day of lent which is 40 days before easter and stuff. i'm not going to get into the religious side of it, but basically on ash wednesday, one is not meant to eat meat or have any luxuries as it is the first day of lent,(i hope this is right like) so the day before hand, everyone goes mad eatin loadsa pancakes, like sabrina. remember that episode? she went through so many pancakes.

yesterday was pancake tuesday, not sure of its origins to be honest, something to do with it being the first day of lent. Like, you have to give up something for lent so you get to have something nice the day before or something. I really should know more about this.

Traditionally, you give something up for Lent - and it was always a luxury, otherwise there wouldn't be much commitment involved! Because of this, you would try to get rid of all the luxury and rich foods in the house (usually jam, honey, fruit etc. left over from Christmas, and then eggs, flour...) before Lent began... pancakes were an ideal way to do so!
