I'm pretty sure this was asked before but I couldnt find the thread. Does anyone know who Damos biggest musical influences were when he was growing up?

i definitely can see Jacques Brel's influence, cos how he wrote that
song "fool" so French! it's Damien's song, isn't it? i hope i am not
saying something wrong. and the end bits in Professor too, sounds so
classicly French..

Leonard Cohen, I think I read somewhere that his version of halleluja is more a nod to Cohen than Buckley.

Nothing wrong with that mate, frankly without Buckley I would never had heard halleluja, didn't like cohen's version that much... Just because JB didn't write it, that has no bearing on its/his influence on others!!!

Yeah he said Leonard Cohen has had a really big influence on him, and he also said he thinks the Frames are the best band in Ireland....

Well the thing about Jeff's version is that it was one of those rare times when he took someone else's song and did something so wonderful with it it's a complete reinvention and it nearly became "his song"(IMHO he did it twice but not as many people have heard his version of "The way young lovers do"), Hendrix did it with "all along the watchtower", Johnny Cash did it with "Hurt".

And yes, I know that Jeff based his version on John Cale's Edited by: #Ian#
