hannadanna - ~Nods~

Had a look earlier, and there are about 10 songs on there... noticed some good other 'rarities' too, such as the Goldfish Memory soundtrack, the 'Birthday Gig' that I've been hunting for, and a load of other little beauties...

Okay... FTP is somewhere that can get files from. It's like a webserver (which holds web pages) but for files that can be downloaded directly.

You use a program to access an FTP server (A good one being CuteFTP - http://download.com.com/3000-2160-10216669.html)

However, that's just a trial version - you have to buy the full one (Apparently )

Once you've installed that, you're nearly there.

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a part of the Internet Protocol suite that is able to
transfer computer files between machines with widely
different operating systems

Mario and a few others have set up ftp servers, filled with
Damien Rice material. Download and install the software mentioned
above, and run it. Once opened, you need to connect to the one of the
servers (If your lucky you'll get in!) by entering the user name and
password in the relevant boxes. FTP commonly runs on port 21. In computing, a port (derived from seaport) is usually an interface where
data is sent and received. Setting it to port 21, as standard just tells where to listen for traffic.

Once connected you will see the folder hirarchy on the left, similar
to Windows "Explore" Each software package will differ, but
they all allow you to transfer the files over to your system. Right
clicking on each file will give you all the relevant options.

Below is some other techno babble that may not be too relevant to beginners, but i added it in anywho! So if you dont understand it just ignore it.

The objectives of FTP are:

  1. To promote sharing of files (computer programs and/or data).
  2. To encourage indirect or implicit (via programs) use of remote computers
  3. To shield a user from variations in file storage systems among hosts.
  4. To transfer data reliably
    and efficiently.

Disadvantages are:

  1. Passwords and file contents are sent in plaintext
  2. It is hard to filter FTP traffic using a firewall, since the data connection is made to an
    apparently arbitrary port
  3. It is possible to tell a server to send to an arbitrary port of a third computer

FTP, though usable directly by a user at a terminal, is designed mainly for
use by programs.

Many sites that run FTP servers enable so-called "anonymous ftp[/i]". Users do not
need an account on the server.
They are asked to send their email addresses as their passwords, but there is no verification.

FTP and web browsers

Nowadays, web browsers can manage the FTP protocol, via a URL in the form
ftp://<ftpserveraddress>(e.g., ftp://ftp.fortunecity.com).

A username and password may also be
added:ftp://<login>:<password>@<ftpserveraddress>.

Emmett, maybe you could update the FAQ section to include a little more info about ftp servers and connecting to them. As it seems the relevant info keeps getting lost here, as new topics push it all down the list.

Just and idea.
