They started playing the new Frames single "Finally" on Irish radio last night, so listen out for it. I really like it I think, but it's not a big radio single like "Fake" was, but maybe that's a good thing. Here's what Hot Press has to say about it:
Frames fans feast on this: the verdict on the first single, the artwork unveiled, plus details of the Frames new album The Frames go for chart glory again with the August 20 release of ‘Finally’. It's the first track to be lifted from their new album, which hotpress.com can exclusively reveal is titled Burn The Maps, and will be released September 17. 'Finally' finds Glen Hansard maniacally preaching over a marching snare rhythm that’s equal parts Jimmy Chamberlain and ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart'-era Joy Division. “Did you fall on your way?/It’s a long way down/Welcome back to your place/Hope you know it now,” Glen intones as the fiddle swirls and the jangly guitar builds. While not as instantly anthemic as, say, ‘Revelate’ or ‘Pavement Tune’, it sounds like it’d be right at home on US Adult Album Alternative (AAA) rock radio. Bonus cuts on the various formats include the winsomely acoustic ‘Roads Outgrown’ and ‘The Waiting Room’, a Colm Mac Con Iomaire-penned instrumental that marries cello to the tinkliest of pianos. Resourceful as ever, the Hot Press Covert Operations Team has managed to track down a copy of the ‘Finally’ cover and the band shot, taken in China, which features inside. Meanwhile, BellX1 and Halite are the latest additions to the bill for The Frames’ August 21 show in Dublin’s Marlay Park. Completing the line-up are Supergrass and Idlewild. Edited by: emmett |

that's the dogiest picture of the Frames I've seen since 1992 . Tom Dunne played the new single on Wednesday night too. Can't wait for the album.
I don't think Fake was supposed to be the big radio hit that it became.. once the band release a single they really have no say as to what way the radio stations are going to react to it. Like Damien Rice for example, sold 1 million albums, and how often did his songs get played on Irish radio?.... 300 radio plays for the entire year of 2003!! Crazy.

I've heard it twice now so my opinion is subject to change after some mature reflection but my initial reaction is that Glen's voice is in "strangled cat" mode.

I wanna hear it! *pouts* The instrumental sounds cool, too. Wonder if Colm wrote it with Rachel? I agree with loveless - that picture is aweful I do love the cover art, though! Bring it on! And tour!

Simon Goode was in The Mary Janes with Mic Christopher and Karl Odlum and he played with the Frames after Dave Odlum departed. I was at a Mundy gig a few weeks ago and he was playing guitar there aswell. He's been in nearly every Irish band around..

hmm, I've just heard 'Finally' for the first time and *crouches down low to avoid any thumping* I don't think I really like it . For starters, the mix on it - in my humble opinion - is really bad, esp on the vocals. I mean, it's not the worst song I've heard, but you get to the stage that you expect the Frames, who've gottento a certain standard of songwriting, to keep up that standard.I don't think they have with this song, and not because it's not a commercial song, they have a lot of great songs that aren't very commercial that I love. I just hope the rest of the album has more to offer........What does anyone else thing? *tiptoes away slowly* Edited by: looly

true. I'll give a few more listens before I make my mind up but I don't think that's gonna change the production on it . I really think that's very bad for a band of their standards.

heard this song ages ago when they performed at eurosonic back in january but never thought this was going to be their new single then when i heard it on the radio when they 1st start playing it i was like thisis so familiar then i put 2 and 2 together and i got 5 and i also realised that thats how i knew the song already from eurosonic even thought the lyrics were a little bit different.so there u go did you fall on your way its a long way down welcome back to your place i hope you know it now cause its true what you say we're the wrong way round and the lie that cut the worse has been resoved, and then reversed finally.... ah come on, show the way where are you running now is it lack of restraint has you turning round and in the end, we're both the same you played your part, so youre part to blame when you want somethng that much its drawing trouble on your life and when you found something that good its hard to focus on whats right and in the end what hurt the worst has been resovled and then reversed and i know its not what you said its like the letter i just sat and read finally..... you found something so good its drawing trouble on your life and when you lost something so good its hard to focus on whats right

Have heard it live a couple of times now, and i think it's much better live. I know music is generallybetter live, but i think there is a really big difference between the recording and the way they play it live. Looking forward to hearing it on Saturday!

Interesting point, cos I think the song has great potential. I just don't like the way they recorded it. I'd say there's more energy to it when they play it live. The first few verses of the recorded version sounds like the key is too low for Glen to sing it properly.

Something about the end of that song seems really weird. The singing, the mixing.....?

yeah the singing, sounds like it was just done in one take or something. the rest of the record it fine.

i'm listening to it right now, and my god it's so much better live. i
don't like the end of it, i can't understand why though. it's better even when it's just glen and he's out of tune, for god's sake. i hope the album isn't like this...i do like the waiting room though, it has a nice sound to it.

Fair point Foshizzle! I don't think Glen is whiney. I just think that the key the song is in is too low at the beginning for Glen. Sure he's able to sing it but it doesn't compliment his voice in anyway and sounds like he's struggling to reach the notes at some points. And if I'm not mistaken, it even sounds as though he's actually hitting some flat notes to compensate. The acoustic version on Today FM this morn was a big improvement to the album version, me thinks. It's hard to listen to something like that when you know they are capable of so much better! i liked the acoustic version this morning too, but you know it didnt have the power of the studio version and its missing Colms violin bigtime! i like when glen sings low, he does things with his voice that might not be necessarily musically wonderful, but hes certainly not afraid to be creative
