the 'for god's sake, someone please record the electric picnic transmission' thread
mmkay?
probably only the major acts will be broadcast, but still if someone can record (audio/video whatever) the show, that'd be awsome the bands i'd love to see: damo (duh??), glenn/frames, paul noonan, vetiver, rufus , antony, josh ritter, super furry animals, polly harvey...

You'd need some decent hard-drive based equipment to do it properly, I'm sure everyone will have the timers on the video machines set at home, but digital transfers from a satellite reception won't show up unless someone makes a point of doing it. The radio would be a little easier, Lots of people could record that to hard drive.

No, it's never really worth it, there's always some guy shouting "Damien I want to have your babies" standing beside you, and he usually ruins the recording. Anyway lately I'm becoming more and more snobby and purist about gigs... I really do prefer to just stand there and take it all in rather then holding a camera up for the night, or making sure that the mic is pointing in the right direction or whatever. People who need to do that sort of thing to enjoy themselves should have stayed at home. They're not as bad as the people who scream out random statements during the quiet parts of songs. More recently I saw Thom Yorke singing and playing the piano, and there was some guy near me who just would not shut up about the price of property in Ireland. At some point you really have to wonder what these people pay the money for.

i just got word from the field that damien's performance was spectacular! he pulled out all the stops and anyone who had any reservations after the vicar street gigs.. well.. they wouldn't anymore if they had seen him tonight! oh lord please tell me someone recorded the tv broadcast irish people not at the picnic - was damien on tv?? Just so that you guys know, the coverage of the picnic from RTÉ on both the tv and the radio did absolutely no justice to what the whole vibe of the place was like or about. Damien's show in the electric arena was apparently kinda good and a bit crappy at the same time, but he played a good few other shows over the weekend, and they were well worth seeing. All in all though, the recorded coverage of the festival was just a bit of a pisstake... The festival itself was amazing though, and the Big Tree was probably the highlight for me, it was just so chilled out and clean. Lisa and Tanja did a really incredible job of putting the whole thing together. They even had chairs made out of grass... and knitting.

Yeah, it only took an hour or two... Beautiful. I don't think anyone else would really understand though.

ah sean of course we wouldn't understand.. it was an amazing once in a lifetime event that i'm sure you had to experience to fully understand..
but some of us had to settle for the remote/vicarious experience (crappy webcasts and secondhand stories and such) so be a sweetheart and humor us tell us about it |

Well, after most things were over for the weekend The Frames started playing on the Big Tree, they had planned to do a twenty minute set as a kind of farewell thing, but that plan obviously didn't take off and the whole set lasted for about eighty minutes. Mostly odds n' sods with a few very new songs and a few classics thrown in for good measure. They left after playing the last song and a few minutes later they came back and Glen said something about playing a calm one to send us all off into the night, so themselves and Rónán Ó Snodaigh kicked into Skylarkin' and towards the end started singing the first line of the chorus over and over again, they said that the crowd should keep singing it, no clapping, no cheering, just let them leave the stage, and sing. So everyone did, and then people headed off, but around thirty or forty of us kept singing, Glen walked out to sing with us for a little while, and security were telling us to move along, but we kept singing. About an hour and a half later we were still standing in a circle singing the first line of the chorus to Skylarkin'. I can't really explain why, I think it was just something that people needed to do. I've been in a lot of drumming circles and things like that before, it sort of felt a bit like that. When it ended everyone just stopped at the same time... It was good. But it was one of those things that you just had to be there for, you can't really explain or repeat it. It just was... and that's it.
