Okay. I am not 110% sure here, but here's what I I've been able to come up with: Boss TU-2 Chromatic Tuner, a Line 6 DL4 Delay Modeler (for delays and looping), a ProCo "The Rat" distortion pedal (which I believe he uses for his taped up second vocal mic), I believe he is using one of those Marshall overdrive pedals for the guitar, a Vox wah wah, a small Orange amp, a Lowden acoustic guitar (with internal mic), a Telecaster once in a while, in-ear monitoring. There are some more pedals that I haven't been able to identify yet, but I believe that the above is right.

He patches both the guitar and the second mic into the DL4. The Rat has got a filter section which I believe he uses in addition to the distortion circuit to shape the sound of the vocals. I am not sure how he amplifies the signal of the second mic. Perhaps he patches it directly into The Rat. Not sure though.

I guess you are mostly interested in the live setup, but here is something I wrote over at the official forum about the sessions for the album (I believe it is relevant considering the name of this topic): He used a relatively simple 8 track as his main recording unit. If you look at some of the photos ( http://www.damienrice.com/art.html# ) taken by Robbie Fry during the album sessions you can see that he is using his "dual mic" setup (page 16) there as well. Those are dynamic mics. In another picture (page 17) you can see a mic over Tomo's drum kit and a man (possibly Jonathan Digby) sitting by a small analogue mixer and a laptop PC, which might have been the "recording unit." You can also see in one picture (page 19) that is taken from the same photo session that a jack is plugged into Damien's guitar, which means he might have been using the internal mic/pickup of the guitar on the record - prehaps along with another external mic. He didn't nessecarily even use the same setup for all the songs, but my guess is that these pictures were taken during one of the recording sessions for O, and that may indicate that Damien used the aforementioned equipment. If you look at the video from the AOL Sessions you can see that they use some mics that look quite like the tube mic AKG C 12 VR. I don't know if these mics were used when recording O as well, but that session sure sounds pretty good anyway.

I just got a reply from damienrice.co.uk here's the original e-mail, their reply and my retort.... Sorry to bother you Ian,<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /> I’m just setting up a band in tribute to the wonderful man that is Damien rice and I need some information on how he is set up on guitar and second vocal mic, what pedals, how they’re wired etc, 2nd vocal mic, how it’s wired, could you pass this on to Damien or his management company or someone who knows this information, I really want to get going on this as soon as possible. Your help would be really appreciated in this matter Thanks in anticipation Ade their reply Hi Ade I'm sorry to say I wont be able to give you this information as this is something that our technical engineers look after. Good look with the music. Kind regards Fiona My retort Sorry to hound but would the technical engineers be able to help me with this matter, I know it’s a pain and all that, I’m a freelance web designer myself and when that’s what you do and people start bugging you for stuff you can’t supply them with it’s pants, but, please, please could you pass this on to either them or damo himself, I’m sure he would love to help me the splendid man, I’m probably his loyalist fan, please, please, I want to be as close to it as I can doing live performances! Yours in anticipation Ade and Rice Was this too grovely?? |

The line 6 DL4 is uses for the delays and the sampled loops on the vocals is it? assume the gaffa tape around the FX mic is used to minimise any other sound bleeding in to it, looks like a shure SM57 underneeth it all (used by others for same type of effects). I'm interested in the internal mic, where'd you get one from? who makes them now? Also, what marshall distortion pedal is it he has guys?

he uses the DL4 for loops on the guitar and main mic (not sure if the distortion mic is hooked up as well but if it is there must be some sort of mixer or Y-cable since the DL4 only has two inputs)... any echo you hear is coming from a long string of Boss DD# (not sure if they are DD3, DD5, or DD6) echo pedals... good luck finding out anything about his mics... i'm not sure why he always has the windscreens on them but no one knows what they are... i wouldn't be surprised if they were custom mics... i wouldn't put it past damo... i'd also love to know what pickup/preamp he uses on his lowden but i'm sure this will remain a mystery as well... i've long since given up on trying to discover his toys... he's far too secretive about them!

The first ? is a BOSS FV-50H volume pedal (http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/FV-50H/), as I have the same one. The pedal next to the DL4 looks like a Zachary Vex pedal of some sort (http://www.zvex.com/effects.html)These are hand painted and very pricey. The Boss ? are Boss LS-2 Line selectors (http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/LS-2/)These switch between different amp/ efffects setting etc.. These are the only boss pedal that have different colour knobs on them. Hope this helps.Edited by: Mr P |

i would guess he needs line selectors so he can decide if he wants his vocals or guitars going to the DL4... if you start looping and include the mic it will bring in all stage sound... better to only loop in vocals when your intent is to loop vocals... that's just my guess as it's how i set up my own rig with line selectors before the DL4 so i can select what i want to loop... also, i'm guessing that the box you have a question mark over is some sort of DI or preamp or combo of the two...
