Default Religion....

I was just mulling this around in my head for a bit. I figured I'd attempt to get feedback, so here I go. I find that Damo uses a bit of religious terminology in his songs...any thoughts? Ave Maria at the end of Baby Sister, the part of Delicate, Cold Water...and I can't get the thought out of my head that Volcano is somehow biblically related. Am I crazy or has anyone noticed this?

you're not crazy, i've noticed that too. how about little speech before me, my yoke and i about him feeling guilty for playing with his "friend". i think he grew up in a religious enviroment and that's influenced his songwriting

Oh, yeah; I forgot about My Yolk and I. Good point. In the version of that I have he says: "All good things are bad, well not. Well, actually, yes..." Classic Catholic. I think you are right, and the religion is still in him, actually. Though he always struck me as very Zhen Buddhist, I think I regress. Classic Catholic/Protestant, because I don't remember what part of Ireland Celbridge is in. Any of you natives know off-hand?

D'You think Baby sister is a attack on christianity?

"keep drinking, or he'll beat u, he'll bleach your eyes"?

i.e, Drink the blood of christ or he'll beat you (God?)

Because the Ave Maria seems like its a lullaby to get her to sleep, but twisted...

Dont want to speculate on whether its his baby sister but ...

Baby Sister was written for a film... about the characters in the film... a child who is abused.

Wow, I guess I never really thought about Baby Sister like that. If you think the way I did; about the Zhen Buddhism thing, it would make complete sense. Which, in light of what Blackcanvas wrote, makes the song a lot more complicated. I always interpreted Baby Sister as him speaking out against child abuse. Kind of satirizing it; though I like the "against Christianity" a lot better. Hmm, good thought. But if it is against Christianity, how do we explain the other references to the Bible and Christian thought which we've already established frequent his songs?

...just thinking...

Most of Ireland in the 70's had Catholicism drilled into them at school and all over daily life, being raised Catholic isn't something you could have escaped from them at the time. It would be a real novelty to find someone who grew up in a secular environment in 70's Ireland. He's spoken about it at shows before playing Me, My Yoke And I, but it's usually the same old story for most people so it's not worth going into detail over.

Hi Penny,

I can send you a copy if you Email me (strummeister@gmail.com), can't remember where I got it but its labelled 'live'. The religion thing - just my opinion but I think cold water's obviously about religion and death. Not sure about Baby Sister, I would go with Wheels on that one - but I don't know the film. Anyone know it?
