Hi to all. This is my first time on the forum. I'm from the States and will be moving to Ireland at the end of the year. I'm wondering what to prepare myself for. What's the country like? Thanks.

woo hoo! rock on steph. Ireland is great, but you have to be prepared to meet a good few boozehounds. We do like the pub and the majority of people's social lives do revolve around the pub although there are people who live very happy and active lives outside of them. Where in Ireland are you moving to and what for? Because things really depend on what part of the country you're living in.

I love Ireland! Ive been there a few times and I wouldnt mind moving there! Compared to America I think the Irish people in general are much more easy-going and its a very nice atmosphere to be in...although, I only speak for where I have stayed, and that is Clare, Kerry, Galway and Limerick. I'm finishing a Master's Degree in English next semester; my thesis is on Joyce. I'm not sure why I've decided to move; I think I need a change of scenery. I'm not sure where I will move...lots depend on the circumstances. I need a job. I have no idea what the economy is like or even wherea good place to start would be. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. |

If you come to Dublin I reccomend rathmines as a place to live, its only a 15 minute walk from the city centre and has everything you'd need in its village, with nice pubs resaurants and shops etc. If you're looking for accomadation check out www.daft.ie. What kind of job are you going to be looking for?

I may be wrong but I think you need a thing called a Higher Diploma in Education (H. Dip Ed) to get a job teaching here, especially in english.
If you wanted to teach maths, IT or Science then they might allow you to slide on the H.Dip but maybe not english. Or maybe you don't need it at all and I'm talking crap.

I assumed that an advanced degree in English would help in finding a job. I'm curious about the Higher Education Degree. There's no way I could teach math or science...thanks for all the help, though.

yeah i think you need a h dip too... but you could probably tutor? Unfortunately there are a lot of people in ireland with degrees working in jobs that they are overqualified for.

Raises hand,
HELLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I think the thing with the H Dip. is that you are placed in a school when you are doing it, or perhaps thats just from the second year on.

I just need a place to stay and enough money to live on. I think once I settle down I will have a better idea about what to do next. What is Dublin like? I've never been outside of America. |

I want to move to Ireland, too. If anyone knows where I can get a job teaching about American law and politics, let me know I don't know why this topic is in this forum. Shouldn't it go elsewhere?

Dublin is ok, Galway is probably the coolest place in the country. You should have no trouble initally finding a basic job to help you make ends meet. Ireland is quite expensive though. Depends on what your work experience is.

I think she just meant it should be in the everything else section rather than the damien rice section.
The H-dip students go on teaching practice a for a couple of weeks but thats it. My mom is doing a h dip primary at the moment, thats how I know.

Actually thats quite interesting, all of this I mean... I'll most likely become an English teacher, only I don't want to stay in France. Yet I don't want to teach French. But could I teach English in an English speaking country? (ie Ireland)

just did a little research, and steph you could probably be a sub, or even get work teaching in a secondary school but not on full pay. There is a real shortage of teachers so they're apparently letting people with degrees teach. Don't take that as gospel but thats what my sources tell me.
And patricia, according to my genius mother if you have a french qualification you could teach no problem, unless you wanted to teach primary school in which case you would have to do an irish exam. phew.

My French teacher was German, so I probably speak French with a Dutch/American/German accent. |

You don't need a HDipEd to teach in Irish schools, but if you don't have one you would never be able totake upa permanent position in a secondary school. Sub teaching would be an option though and as far as I know sub teachers get a fairly high hourly rate of pay. Tutoring in one of the universities would also be an option
