Cold, cold water surrounds me now
And all I've got is your hand Lord, can you hear me now? Lord, can you hear me now? Lord, can you hear me now? Or am I lost? Love one's daughter Allow me that And I can't let go of your hand Lord, can you hear me now? Lord, can you hear me now? Lord, can you hear me now? Or am I lost? [chanting] Cold, cold water surrounds me now And all I've got is your hand Lord, can you hear me now? Lord, can you hear me now? Lord, can you hear me now? Or am I lost? I think it is about desperation and crying out for help. Half the time he is crying out for help but because he is alone (I guess since he is lost, he is also alone) no one is around to help him. So he turns to the next best thing and cries out to God. He is desperate and clinging onto whoever/whatever is coming to help him get out of the situation he is in. |

The story Damien tells is that one night he had a big fight with his mother, and he went to a friends house so that he didn't have to stay at home, after doing which he suddenly felt very alone and stupid. He also felt that when people get scared of what's happening to their life, then, and only then do they turn to god.
Of course the music and melody for 'cold water' existed years before the song was written, in the form of 'never'/'eve, the apple of my eye', so really he just wrote new lyrics for old music, i think it's an improvement.
