Default the last band/artist you have seen live?

my last band was depeche mode. it was a huge and really great gig!
after that i've "just" seen a few local bands and friends.

I saw The Guggenheim Grotto a few nights ago for their CD release party and they were SO good! They're adorable on stage with their banter and Irish accents. And the sweetest, most gracious guys you'll meet.

The venue was really intimate - maybe 100 people max inside, and it was set up with tables and chairs so it was more like a coffee house than an actual gig. It was fantastic. It was a really charming night all around.

We got acoustic versions of all the songs, and for the encore it was completely unplugged. They just came right up into the audience, stood on top of two chairs and sang.

I can completely understand why! I don't think we've got a small venue in Toronto that even compares.

Glad you enjoyed it! He has one of the sexiest voices live. He's coming back around my way in April - I can't wait!

Really like The Living Room as a venue, I saw Tom McRae there a while back.

I saw Calexico a good while ago here in BCN in a nice little deathtrap of a venue (one of the most popular places in town with only a single exit that is a narrow staircase...)

It was great fun!

I did Canadian Music Week this year and it was so much fun! It was exhausting, but fantastic. It involved something like 500 bands over 50 venues in 4 days! We saw about a dozen bands or so. The highlights:

Gentlemen Reg
Fun, slightly frivolous, indie pop. He's the "it guy" in the Toronto indie scene right now and one of the most amazing performers. His lyrics are fun (see: The Boyfriend Song), he's playful with his entire band (and I'm very glad we got to hear the keyboardist sing a verse on her own, their voices work really well together, and that was one of my favorite songs of the night), and he even had an impromptu guest (someone from Broken Social Scene). He's fiery and has pretty commanding stage presence and... his gigs are just a ton of fun. I defy anyone to see him live and not walk away with a smile on their face.

Chad VanGaalen
His first song, he did it flamingo style. He did the entire song on one foot. I still can't figure out why (possibly to balance his banjo on his knee?). But it was weirdly... charming. He's lyrically poignant and does a bit of everything: there are slower songs, simpler songs, crescendo-filled songs, fun indie!pop songs, heavy songs, hopeful songs - it makes for one hell of a setlist.

Sprengjuhollin
A band from Iceland that completely stole our hearts. They were surprisingly charming with their not-quite-broken-but-definitely-not-fluent English and fun melodies that had everybody dancing. And for a fun indie!pop band, they're pretty intense. I'd definitely expect to see them on Grey's Anatomy someday (I mean that as a good thing, as a someone-who's-looking-for-fun-and-new-talent-will-discover-them-soon kind of thing).

Black Hat Brigade
My favorite of the entire festival!

There was a definite ringing in my ears after their set, and I could barely hear the friend I was with as she walked right beside me afterward, but it was worth it. These guys were intense. They had unbelievably catchy guitar riffs and I think I just automatically swoon over bands with melodicas. Also, multiple drum sets. There was lots of percussion here. And it was strange, but for such a strong rock and roll band they've got a lot of instrumentation. The songs are so long because they're filled with jams and little riffs that turn into jams and lots of Radiohead-esque moments. They were fantastic.

Lucky Fonz III
He came over from Amsterdam, and though we missed his official CMW set, we did catch him singing with my alma matter. My best friend's in the string orchestra, and the they arranged a pop night, and came up with things like this:

He's got the most adorable lyrics - he reminds me a lot of Lisa, lyrically. There's lots of oceans and seas and rivers and even a ballad about a lonely lighthouse.

Basia Bulat
Another promising Canadian, and another really fun set. She was swinging around her guitar and dancing madly and generally doing a great job in winning everyone over. There were hand claps and accordions and ukuleles and flutes and violins and kazoos and electric harps and intense drumming (by her very cute younger brother)... all set to her indie!folk!pop voice. I'll definitely have to see her again.

^ Same here! He's amazing! (Canadian too ) I've seen him once, and was *this close* to seeing him at CMW, but we ended up going with Chad VanGaalen instead. Oh man, Laura Marling & Dan Mangan in the same day would be brilliant.

Yeah he was great. I had never heard of him and now i wish i had looked at the sxsw schedule beforehand and inspected it carefully so as to hear his music and enjoy him in concert more than i did. I really like his song Unnatural progression and i'm glad he has it up on his myspace because i would have never figured out the name of the song and that would've bugged me soo much... anyways, i'm rambling. he was great. Go canadians!

And i have to say it was even more brilliant than Laura Marling & Dan Mangan in the same day. It was Dan Mangan then Lisa then Laura Marling yaay.

So i just saw Coldplay Sunday night and they were awesome!! Howling Bells and Snow Patrol opened for them and they were both pretty damn awesome too!!!

Howling bells were new to me so i did some research before i left and i actually liked what i heard.. she's very attractive and she had a great voice live... I expected the sound to be somewhat sub-par because it was at GM place (19,000+ people) and yeah.... but it was great sound and she sounded wonderful!

Then Snow Patrol came on and played my favorite song Run and got the crowd going a bit and they were great... Who doesn't want to hear another band from Ireland? lol

And then of course Coldplay came out and the party was really on! After they played Yellow and they threw the big yellow balloons out that pop and turn into confetti they mentioned that the show was being recorded for a LIVE VANCOUVER DVD!!!!! It was the second show in two nights (sat, sun) and they decided to record the second one!! it was sooo kool! lol...

Besides the show being awesome Coldplay has started a thing called the "coldwave" and if you haven't heard about it or seen it it's realllly kool. It's basically a simple wave folks would do at a hockey game or whatever sporting event but only this wave is in the dark. All the lights are turned off and everyone takes out their phones/lighters... anything that creates light. With their light by their side they wait for the countdown and one corner starts the wave and it goes around.. it was really kool! there's some examples of it on youtube but hopefully it will be on the DVD in a better picture than what i have found on youtube... IT was pretty neat tho...

Oh! and they completely surprised everyone when they walked from one end of thebulding to the other to about 14 rows up into the audiance and the first 4 seats into that row they played a few songs from!!! it was crazy! I think we made them come out for a second encore too but i'm not sure.... it's hard to say if the first one was an encore or not haha...

awesome night tho! really looking forward to the DVD!!!!

i went to the donauinselfest last night and saw snow patrol, christl stürmer (well, she was just on the stage when we passed that one) the gipsies and other bands i didn't know. we weren't there too long, so i guess i missed the one or the other good band but well, there'll be another one next year.
the great thing about this festival is that it takes place once a year for three days and loads of radio stations and i don't know what get those bands to play a set and you can go there whenever you want, it's for free and it's set in the middle of the danube on an island which i think is pretty kewl.
