Default Buying an amp for semi-acoustic guitar.

I want to buy an amp for my semi-acoustic guitar. Eventually I plan on buying some effects pedals and looping gear etc...

It's not going to be for performances, more for messing around at home.

Anyone got any good suggestions or advice on things that I need to be aware of?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

thanks,
B

Default semi acoustic amp

erm....take a look at "orange" amps...very high quality...excellent tone i believe for anything acousticy....depends on ya price range really...orange can be a bit pricey...but if ya just messin around at home dont get lured into buyin anything to higher wattage...15 will kick out plenty!!!!

in terms of pedals..i'm after a looping system myself and dont think there cheep either...if its just for messin round have a look at some multi effects pedals...think boss, digitech and zoom do some cheap stuff...can be problematic sometimes...i've got a digitech RP200 (i think!!!)

hope this helps!!!!

I second Hash Brown's endorsement of Orange Amps, I've got the 15 watt one and it's really good, should cost about €150

i just priced amps for my son's new electric and the crate amp was recommended over the orange in the same price range.. went with the crate, it was my first amp too only back then they really looked like a crate, cabinet made of wood etc. it was pretty cool

i asked about acoustic amps when we were in the music store and that guy recommended marshall's acoustic amp too (can't really go wrong with a marshall) i guess the deal there is they have an enhanced mid-range for better, fuller acoustic sound

Sorry, just wanted to check - are you after advice for a semi-acoustic guitar or an electro-acoustic? Everyone has responded with electro-acoustic advice, but you asked about semis in your inital message. The two things are very different beasts, so it would make a big difference to what sort of amp you should get...

If it IS a semi-acoustic, though, and you just want an amp for messing about at home I can strongly recommend the Roland Micro Cube. Tiny but more than loud enough for playing at home, and crammed with all kinds of effects, such as reverb, flanger, phaser, overdrive and chorus, added to which it can emulate a number of top-of-the-range amps, such as a Fender Twin, Marshall stack and a Vox AC30. Plus getting one shouldn't cost you much more than £70. Bargain, I'd say!

Yeah, I really should have elaborated on that point a little bit in my last post, shouldn't I? Sorry about that.

An electro-acoustic is an acoustic guitar which has a pick-up installed, such as the Lowden that Damien Rice plays.

A semi-acoustic is an electric guitar constructed with sound chambers; they are designed predominantly to be played plugged in - probably the most famous example of which is the Gibson ES-335 (pictured below).

Some guitarheads can get very irrate if you use the term "semi-acoustic" when you actually mean "electro-acoustic", so I hope that clears things up
