The ftp server speed seems todepend on how many users are downloading at the same time. When I was downloading the Juniper tracks earlier I was averaging 60k - 100k but I've downloaded shows at faster speeds other days.

Yeah, Im not a big tech guy, I just know how to do use the program. There has been major discrepency regarding the speeds people are pulling and I don't know why.
The server is not exactly professional. Im running it off of my desktop computer. I connect with a cable modem, so bandwidth fluctuates based on demand on my ISP, and my own demands. When Im downloading shows, the server slows down. This, too, is something I hope to address once we get organized with the trading website. Hopefully we can get some more servers running and decrease the demand on mine. |

Thats bits per sec (Kb/s) not bytes (KB/s)right? It cant be bytes can it??? I worked it out with one song, when the download speed was around 111.3 Kb/s (the speed shown on WS_FTP screen) which is 13.9KB/s (the normal notation on file sharing programs), or have i got it wrong? And thats with a broadband connection. Edited by: daol20

You are more correct than you imagine.
The last couple days, I have quite frequently been closing the server to allow more bandwidth to uploads. In that time, I've acquired: 2003-10-04 Los Angeles 2003-02-19 Union Chapel 2002-09-02 The Lobby About 20 videos At this moment Tim is uploading 2002-03-01 And as soon as I get a single md5 file, I can post 2002-12-17 Olympia As for a slow time, there doesn't seem to be one, because both Irish and US fans are downloading, and the 8 hour time difference means when Ireland is in bed, US is in prime time at night, when US is in bed, Ireland is waking up and going to work. I am, however, working on some more servers to alleviate the burden. If anyone is interested, let me know. I will send you the program, and help you set it up. Its very simple and runs off your home pc. Quote:

Is there anyone who is comfortable with seeding shows in Bit Torrant? If we could get some of these shows up on sharingthegroove.org, then we could alleviate alot of the stress on mario's site. Thanks a ton for hosting these, it's much appreciated.

Sounds like bad luck and/or timing - get yourself a decent ftp software like smartftp or aceftp (both free) and set them to keep trying to hook up (I think the accepted retry time is 120 seconds). In theory, it should automatically hook itself up eventually when someone else logs off.
And as for your KCRW issue, try Xi Net Transport - it's great. If you still have issues, mail me and I might be able to set up a temporary FTP site from my laptop for you.

using bit torrents would be a better way of sharing the larger shows

I'm not so sure that bit torrents are the best for long term sharing - people would have to keep the windows open long after they had finished downloading. In practice torrents often dry up after a week or two. Something like edonkey would be better as sources can easilly be left shared and the community would all be helping to spread the sources, so reducing the load on Mario and the other ftp hosts. I'd be happy to host files this way (I have edonkey on 24/7, with a reasonable bb connection 1Mb/400Kb), and we could post links to the files on the board to reduce fakes/reposting/searching issues. Don't want to piss anyone off with this idea, but what does everyone think? Would this be ok under the board T&C's? |

The other option is for a few folks to set up a direct connect hub. Now I won't claim to know much about this, as I have to tunnel to be able to use it, but I know the David Gray SHN community has seen a big shift to using this in the last year. If anyone wants to know more, looksie here:

You're definitely right about torrents drying up after a couple weeks, but they are good for getting the show out to a lot of different people in the short term. I've never used edonkey so I don't know how widespread the program is or if I'm just oblivious. But there's nothing wrong with using that, or bit torrent, or Pony Express for all I care, the more ways we have of spreading the music around the more people will come across it and the more options people will have in case one thing or another doesn't work for them.

Has anyone else had noticed, when they're connected tothe ftp site, that it freezes up? Maybe its the ftp software im using... The last two or three times i've been on, it's freezed and i've had to close it down and restart the program. And once or twice someone else has sneeked in ahead of me, and i cant connect again cos its full. Im not complaining just wondering if its a common problem, or something up with my system.

When I've been on there the worst that's happened is it's really dipped in speed, at times it gets up to as much as 16k then will drop to < 2k which adds tens of hours onto the download. It could be worth having a quick chat with your ISP's support dept as the problem could well originate en route from Marios to yours which they may be able to diagnose and cure for you

The reason your getting around 16k is that Mario has limited each user to around 15k, to allow the max number of users on, with a respectable download speed. Any speedsless than that could be internet traffic or your resources (like upload bandwidth) being used elsewhere. Not sure it the problem is with myISP.....i might be wrong though, it was working fine at one stage.i had presumed that it was something do do with the ftp site itself (like uploads taking place etc). If it keeps happening i'll definitely checkit out. Cheers.Edited by: daol20
