ricefan1, i
suggest you take a look at some of the discussions in the trading
section of this site, there are plenty of points to explain why this is
wrong. </span>You can see that the same guy is
charging a little more than £5.00 a cd!!! These shows are available
free, and the tapers would not be happy (and rightly so) to hear that
the gig that they recorded at great cost and effort, is now being sold
for £14.00 a cd by some scumbag punk!!!!

The tapers have spent alot of effort to share these shows for free, and
they wont continue to do this if people like him get away with selling
these shows.

Everyone of them should be reported!

edit: That user has 25 comments from previous sales. Presumming that
they are all the £14 sales thats atleast £350 that he has made!! I've
not traded on ebay before, but i presume that not everyone comments on
sales, so that must mean there are more.

hey cheers guys for your support. I hate those muppets on ebay. Ricefan man you will have to see that people are making some sort of small (*ahem!*) profit on this CD's. By B+P we make no profit but the profit we have is sharing the wonderous music of Damien. nuff said!
Cheers daol20 and supercille
will keep my eyes pealed for any more and report them!
Lets just hope that ebay do something about them

Yeah, you have to keep in mind just how much eBay has to to with far more serious fraud. I don't think they have the manpower to truly follow each and every complaint.

BUT...I do know that they often will shut down auctions and I suspect they log those complaints, because I know from sellers who complain about constantly being shut down.

So, just keep reporting them as they come in

daol20 sorry for the slow response.

I have looked around the trading forum but I am still at a loss to see where your (and the other's) anger is coming from. As you said

These shows are available free, and the tapers would not be happy (and rightly so) to hear that the gig that they recorded at great cost and effort, is now being sold for £14.00 a cd by some scumbag punk!!!!
So you accept that this guy has gone to "great cost and effort" but still call him a "scumbag punk" for asking £14.00 for a cd.
The tapers have spent alot of effort to share these shows for free, and they wont continue to do this if people like him get away with selling these shows.
is this not like saying that Oxfam will stop giving out free food once they see that Tesco are getting away with selling it for money! If somebody is motivated by sharing and charity, then the actions of others dont come into it, does it?

Dont get me wrong there are many scumbag punks feeding off music fans. Ogranised crime gangs producing bootleg copies of legit albums are #1, with ticket touts a close second, and private copiers / distributors of official CDs in bronze medal position.

Sorry for the long post, keep the faith!

No its not!

To be honest that </span>comparison </span></span>seems slightly absurd........ but to keep with it....Its
more like Oxfam finding out that the food they're giving out for free,
is being taken from them by Tesco and sold down the street to people. Were Tesco are
making money from Oxfam's generosity.

But lets not get into that kind of BS.

<?:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />

just to set the record straight - and in case ricefan1 doesn't know this: he seems to be selling something other people have recorded. so in order to gethimself some cashhe's really exploiting:
1) damien's music and effort, and his goodwill to let tapers record his shows
2) the tapers who were the ones putting great effort and cost into recording damien's great music
3) the fans, who end up paying a lot of money for a recording when they might as well get the music for free, if only they knew about where and how to get iti'd hate it if damien changes his mind about letting his shows being taped because the recordings aren't used according to the original idea of live music being free for all, and i'm disgusted by ppl who exploit the good will of others for their own economical gain (so i'm quite often disgusted, unfortunately...)

yeah, i think so. on http://www.damienricetrading.tk/you can read this:

The taping and trading of live music dates back at least thirty years. Its origins are atributed to the Grateful Dead and their fans. Several bands followed in having an open taping policy, notably the Allman Brothers Band and Phish.

In the early 1990's, the Dave Matthews Band formed, and hired Coran Capshaw to be their manager. Coran was a Deadhead whose exposure to the trading scene gave him the idea to grow DMB's audience through live performance, rather than studio albums. DMB's success was attributed to this policy, and has revolutionized the concept of taping and trading.

Following the DMB model, dozens of upcoming artists use live recordings as free promotion. By merely permitting tapers to record and distribute the artist's show, at no cost to the artist, music spreads across continents to people who are most interested in music, without having to worry about radio play, interviews, or other forms of active promotion.

However, open taping is threatened by people acting against the spirit of this policy. The sale of live recordings negates all the afforementioned benefits, and violates artists' property rights. Purchasing live recordings is just as harmful as selling them.

...doesn't fully answer your question, but i think it's implyed in thewww.damienricetrading.tk/ concept, since they even mention it on the front page thereEdited by: supercille

Perhaps an unpopular opinion, but I dont see how anyone is losing out on a bootleg being sold for a fiver? The songs are unreleased and any person who is willing to pay a fiver for a live version would almost certainly buy the studio recorded releases of the song when/if they come out. Furthermore, not everyone knows about B&amp;P, or trading etc, a lot of people who buy bootlegs are people who have just seen CD's by their favourite artists down the market and thought "I've never heard of THAT album" they take a look, fancy it, buy it.

Bootlegs have always been sold, always will be sold, I just really dont see why it would hurt anyone, I mean chances are that the people who are selling them, paid for them at a market in the first place, in which case, its their possession, they paid for it, surely its their right to sell it for what they paid for it?

I could be well wrong here, and I'm sorry if I upset anyone, but its just my opinion, I started out buying bootlegs, then went to trading, then I lost contact with all my trading friends (before I got into Damien Rice) and now I'm consindering buying a GOOD bootleg, one of a full gig with good sound quality, now you may offer to do that for free via B&amp;P but if I hadn't joined this forum a little while ago, I'd never have known about it. A final point... Say a person who buys the bootleg rips MP3s from the CD, they would then be distributed for free to a lot more people, so in a way it can be a good thing.Edited by: Jebus

hey jebus

i started out buying Damo bootlegs from places like e-bay being well unaware that this wasn't meant to happen. Since being a member of eskimo friends i have stopped this. Yes buying them first is a way by getting in to bootlegs but i was quick to realise that i was doing wrong. I agree with selling bootlegs to make a profit partly because i can't like others afford to always fork out for CD's that I want. My problem is i'm very much into buying CD's. CAn't go on to amazon or go into HMV without buying something. SO i'm please that it is light money relief to not have to pay for bootlegs.
