Where did you first hear a Damien Rice song?
I was on an email list for Sarah Mclachlan when this girl posted just raving about Damien Rice and how awesome his lyrics were. I blasted her.... and year later I decided what the hell, I'll check him out. I found "O" on eBay for cheap and listened.. what a sweet love affair since then. Especially Cold Water. haven't listened to sarah in an awfully long time!

On a compilation CD entitled 'Contemporary Irish Music and Film', got it when my father went to Galway for a conference and I went with him. It had Volcano on it from Damien, but it took a while for me to notice it among the other wonders.

i heard the blower's daughter when i saw closer at the cinema. i got very obsessed with it but for some reason never really thought of getting other songs. a few weeks later my friend was answering one of those myspace quizzes and she mentionned cheers, darlin. i liked the way the title sounded and got O the next day!

I first heard Damien Rice on an internet radio station at work a couple of years ago - Cannonball & Volcano. I really liked them both - couldn't get Cannonball out of my head for several days - so I bought the CD that weekend. I think it was autumn of 2004.

i heard damien for the first time on tv show dawson´s creek (i said this before), april 2003. they played "the blower´s daughter" at the very end on the episode and i instantly fell in love with the song... a few days after, i went to the music page (dawson´s creek site) and i found the number of the song and this link to his site... it was one of my loveliest memories about damien...
by the way... very welcome to the igloo riceman!

I first heard him via the internetsite "Pandora". A site that plays artist depending on your taste. The song was Cannonball and I've been listening to Damien every day since then...

First song I heard was 'Groovin'... someone played me a recording they had made at an early show. Can't remember exactly when that was... well before anything was released... let's say March 1970

Age's ago on a BBC Glastonbury program. He was playing Volcano in their backstage area. I still haven't saw a online clip of that since, would be good if I could find it.

A friend of mine sent me a video where he has playin The Blowers Daughter in front of an audience. I think it was his exam after the guitar course or something like that. Anyway, then I asked him to sent me the song and so I got to know Damien. This was back in 2004.

I first started listening to Damo in November of 2006. My ex-fiance just broke my heart and I was in really bad shape. While chatting in an internet chatroom, someone mentioned how much they liked Damien rice... I had never heard of him. So, I went to youtube and typed "Damien Rice" and the first video that popped up was the "Blowers Daughter." The first time I played it I just listened... and was captivated. The second time... I broke down in tears. I must have listened to it twenty times that night.
Now he is my favorite musician and I ALMOST never listen to The Blowers Daughter now. |

by the way the first time i heard him was at the movies in late 2003 early 04 not sure which, i went and saw a movie called "in good company" and it was just miserable and boring but the girl i was with was enjoying it, so there i was half asleep and all of a sudden cannonball comes on and just completely blows me away, i rush home that night listen to that soundtrack on amazon or somewhere, and no sign of it, so i went to some site that showed every song in the movie and sure as **** when i typed in damien rice cannonball, gave it a listen there it was. next day i was at my local music store buying O. and couldnt believe how great the whole cd was. and now 4 years and 5 shows later hes still by far my favorite artist, and just about the only one i listen to besides david gray.

You really mean when did I first see the light, right?
I must admit, it was nothing special ((what am I saying, everything about Damien is special!)) but what I really mean is that my story is pretty mediocre, especially for most...... eh Americans? I saw Closer and was mesmerized by the scene of Natalie Portman walking down the street in a white tank and Damien singing "... I can't take my eyes off of you..." Those were the only words I remember, and I quickly raced off the google him. I found his name, CD, info, etc. A few days later ((much to my embarrassment)) I downloaded the entire CD illegally ((if I can only explain!)). I didn't expect to find anything else to impress me, but I took a shot at it about a month later and sunk into our leather chair on a rainy day and just listened to O in its entirety in one sitting. Amie played first and I was speechless at the strings. I thought, "Well, ok, he's got 2 that are good. We'll see about the rest." Yet track after track amazed me.. I was literally hanging off every last work and strum and hum. To this day, I have never met an album so expertly crafted, so intricately woven, with such raw emotion, or so simply honest, yet so rich and full of beauty. I may be young, but I have a very diverse music repetoire, and I must say that this CD is still number 1 after all these years. It is simply unparalled, and though I try to describe why, I don't think that anyone nor I has every been able to aptly convey why this CD transcends everything. |

a friend recommended me to him, so I downloaded a song off some random website. I think the first ones I heard were Delicate and Volcano. This friend later burned a copy of O for me. ^__^

No. Good idea though. Thought that was the wrong place to be obessing over a different artist. doesn't change the fact that she was right........

A friend of mine took me to his my first Damien concert and I immediatly got kinda hooked... it's as simple as that! I think he's live so much better than on cd... that doesn't mean that I don't like his cd's... but I prefer his songs live.

I was sitting up really late playing poker one night back in 2003 or 2004. As always I had the TV on some random music channel just to have some background noise. That night it was an obscure show on where they played unknown (mostly ****) songs. Then Blower´s daughter came on. I just freezed and actually missed playing a big pot because I had to watch. That night I ordered his album from a website, figured out on the morning that I couldn't wait so I bought it at a musicstore instead. So now I have two.

One of my friends had his album and mentioned it to me but said I wouldn't like the music. A while after I saw Damien on one of those late shows (Jay Leno I think?) where he performed the blowers daughter and I was immediately hooked. I actually called one of my friends up to turn on the show to watch him and she eventually became hooked as well.

The rooftop of my host's house in Paraguay, homsick as ****, in the middle of an aftermath of unanswered love, in the middle of the night, still above 20° Celsius all alone looking at the stars and getting drunk with Chilenian wine.. is there a better way to get to know Damien?

It was Dec. 2004 - I was in Ireland (for the first time) for a grand total of 3 days and The Blowers Daughter was playing on the radio during the drive from Dublin Airport to Dundalk. I got O for Christmas that year and I was absolutely, completely hooked from then on.
But the real this-man-is-brilliant moment came after seeing him live in July, 2006. That show was unbelievable. Damien solo, unplugged, a great theatre dating back to 1919, heat wave in the city/continent, NO air conditioning whatsoever, 2nd row center and a security guard that let my friend get away with taking a candle holder from the stage for me. It was pretty much as close to transcendental as you can get. |
