..........awesomeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeee!

He definitely made it his own.... you don't even think of it as a U2 song until you hear the chorus... wow.

The shouty bits he removed were the best parts of the song.

from some blog:
Quote:
Damien Rice giving a fragile, restrained version of the album’s most enduringly popular track, the lighters-up power-ballad “One.” Rice strips away every bit of stadium-singalong bombast from the song, turning it into a tender hymn of loneliness.

This song made me listen to his music again. It's been a while since I heard one of his songs and now I fell in love all over again. Right now I'm listening to "9". So, thanks again

What is it about this guy that his music makes me tear up? His tone, his mastery of dynamics, the instrumentation and arrangements....I'm a freakin' mess and I love it. He needs to get another album out.

It's so good to hear something new from Damien's mouth!
He definitely got the best song, and sang it the best way..

when will the album be released?

agree with eva, it's too simple and straightforward to me. it doesn't add the big emotions that Bono envokes when U2 plays this live.

Agree with eva and aski. The register of his voice is too low for me here too.

ha ! He's pretty cute :-)

The song is a bit understated but I like it in it's simplicity...Plus I really like the words He switched and therefore the meaning to the song.. It's lovely.

hehe, you´re right. i used to talk about damien in every single example in my classes, but now that i´m in ireland and most of the students are irish i feel a bit intimated, hehe. but i´ll keep talking about him anyway

and i agree with you regarding the cover... and especially about the switch.

I just got the CD with the December (!) issue of Q, backing vocals are Julia Dubsky.

I'm probably not allowed to post the song here, but PM me if you want a 320kbps mp3 of it.

Lovely version, btw.

so it's really that Julia doing the backing vocals? surprised cos she sounds pretty good... if I remember well, her voice at that festival in Santa Barbara where they did What If I'm Wrong was kinda pitchy

glad Vyv is in there too!!!!! and the clarinet of course

finally got the q issue

there's a nice Damien quote about One:

I remember seeing the queues on Dublin’s Grafton Street, people waiting, sleeping, for the first copies of the new U2 record, as if some famine had hit the soul of the muisc world. Two decades later, I busked for the homeless with Bono on the same street. We played One and Bono appeared to forget the lyrics but I didn’t, they were as clear to me as the Our Father. Seventeen is such a powerful age, and One is such a powerful song.

and I know it's not that related but there's an interview with Ed Sheeran on the same issue and he does mention Damien:

Damien Rice was the first artist that made me think that you didn’y need a band. He just does it on his own and he’s very open with his lyrics. I was 11 when I first heard him. I’ve never really been a day person, and I used to stay up all night and watch the music channels. This video came on about 4 o’clock in the morning, just this dude’s mouth singing and it turned out to be Cannonball. The next day I went out and bought his album O. I remember coming home and sitting in my room with my JVC CD player and listening to Volcano over and over again. I couldn’t get past that song. It was the intimacy and the way he conveyed emotions.

I believe julia (or another female) will do backing vocals on 1 or 2 of his tracks on his next record (if their is one)...I dont mean just backing vocals, but vocals like Lisa did in 9crimes or volcano

The whole covers album is pretty good, I really like Jack White's version of Love is Blindness
