can anyone tell me what notes the cello positions translate into? for example: II POSITION on D what note is that? E perhaps (1st posn being D#?). I dunno, can anyone tell me? And is there an easy way to generically figure it out for all strings/positions?

This *might* help. the first image on the left seems (if you zoom in) to indicate the notes for each string in each position...Edited by: Banjaxed

Here's what i reckon from the above diagram... String: E G D A Position: Open E G D A 1stD A E B 2nd ? ? ? ? 3rd E B F# C# 4th F C G D The 2nd position values aren't noted on the diagram, but it looks like the notes for the second position would be: 2ndD#? A#? F? C? I know it seems obvious, but i don't want to presume, as i know virtually nothing about cello.Edited by: Banjaxed

i play the violin but i have a feeling that the spacings are different....on the violin everything is measured in semi tones but banjaxed to be honest it depends what key you are in for what note comes next after the open string
e.g if you are in D Major Open - D 1st - E 2nd - F# 3rd - G 4th -A

Ok, so to measure it in semi tones, is it correct to say that between: Open and 1st there always 2 semitones 1st and 2nd there's always 2 semitones 2nd and 3rd there's always1 semitone 3rd and 4th there's always 2 semitones. Is that the same on all strings?

not nessasarily banjaxed because it depends on what scale you are in on the amound of semitones and tones between each note for example on the string of D on a violin here are the notes
Open - D 1st Semitone - D# or E flat 2nd Semitone - E 3rd Semitone - F 4th Semitone - F# or G Flat 5th Semitone - G 6th Semitone - G# or A flat 7th Semitone - A But yeah on a violin all the spacings are the same on each string but just have different note names

ok, I don't know what is up with some of these explanations. 1st position- normal position, where you first learn to play the notes 2nd- first finger goes where your 3rd would, in this case F# on the D string 3rd- where your fourth finger goes ( in this case G natural) 4th- slide all the way down to where your thumb is resting at the bottom of the neck, place fingers down normally.

I think the word *mastered* is a long way off of anything i play - but pretty happy switching from first to fourth now - and ive been having great fun with staccato and slurring. Recently been working on volcano with my teacher as well |

I think this is my answer, for those interested: ************************************* NORMAL SHIFTING ________0 1 3______4______13 4_____12312312312312 A string- a b c sharp, d shift, e f g sharp abcdefgabcdefgabc D string- d e f sharp, g shift, a b c sharp G string- g a b sharp, c shift, d e f sharp C string- c d e sharp, f shift, g a b sharp (as the notes and shifting gets higher fingers get closer togeather) ************************************* Edited by: Banjaxed
