Default '9 Crimes' video

Do you think there will be one? What do you imagine it would look like?

I was never a big fan of videos, It's not anything to do with the music or anything, it's just that three or four minutes is a pretty challenging window to have to adequately convey something. It's the sort of thing that's just incredible when it's done right. It's just so rare to find a good one though. I couldn't see there being a video for '9 Crimes' because it's the first single, which is traditionally used as more of a testing ground for the album, the next single will probably get a video... Whatever it is.

I could imagine it pretty much being based in performance though, they've pretty much steadily relied on that thus far. They'd probably just think up of a different way to shoot it or something.

The Blower's Daughter / Closer video wasn't based on performance...

Well Damien and Lisa were standing there singing the song, I realise that it wasn't based in performance, but seems to be some kind of fallback for them. The best music video's are the ones that can adequately represent something in a four minute space, and coming up with that kind of artistic concept is a difficult thing. It's value lies in the ability to let the film speak for the music instead of just supplementing it with imagery, which is what Damien's done so far... and that's fine, it's just not as artistically grounded as the music he produces.

Yeah, I agree. I love the new Outkast video (Idlewild Blue). So let's design Damien an artistically pleasing video for '9 Crimes' then...

How about the idea being someone who has just lost the love of their life to death... and taking comfort in the arms of someone else... and the guilt they feel about it.

So a very dark, slow, dreamy video... slow panning past photos of the couple... Lisa or Damien (maybe have to have two stories?) lying in bed with the 'someone new' just after sex. The 'someone new' asleep, Damien/Lisa awake and singing. Also need some way of showing that their love had just died... maybe a wreath or something? All set in a cheap hotel room in a big city, neon lights flashing through the windows...

oooh, an addition.

It's Damien in bed with Lisa...

One of them has lost a love to death... the other's love is maybe in a coma or in prison, or somehow cut off from them. So they are BOTH taking comfort in the arms of another and each lying (back to back) racked with guilt.

if there is to be one, really, anything as simple as the blower's daughter video would suit my tastes better I think. I actually adore that video -- I think it's just enough.

I'm with you Wheels. Cliche ridden mess really.

The Cannonball video is the better video. Artistic and original.

Does anyone know what Damien means at the end of that video, and who that American guy is when he says "the battery just died"?

I have no idea, I would say that it is the only video that they seem to have put any effort into. The video for The Blower's Daughter is complete piss. There's just no conceptual effort in it... It's a pity.

i agree that videos are only truly good when they're done properly. i like music videos, don't get me wrong, but some times if i watch a video a lot, it will put me off listening to the song if that makes sense? like, i can love a song so much, but if i watch the video too many times, i find myself just skipping over it and not wanting to listen to it for a while. it's hard to make every video perfect, but a video like the Cannonball video would be great. doesn't even need to be like that, just a cross between artsy and performance. something very stripped down would work i think. just damien, lisa, and a piano in a room, singing at/with each other, but at opposite ends of the room. that would be cool i guess

Screw this whole it has to be arty idea... that idea applies to every songwriter in the book and is riddled with pretense if you ask me.

I'd rather have something individual...

I'm aware saying something shouldn't exactly be arty but individual is a little contradictory... cause individuality in itself is art... but I don't mean arty in the way some people out there use it these days... I dunno about you guys.

Thanks for that , now I just have to wait for YouTube to come back online so I can watch it... Which reminds me, I should upload that video of The Blowers Daughter that doesn't have the film clips from Closer to YouTube. Last time I checked, it wasn't up there, and it's a much better version I think.

why don't people like this video? i love the light and the wind blowing lisa's hair in all crazy ways and the ocean waves..

and the close ups of damien's face are really intimate i think, he's not in shadows like in the cannonball video (though actually i kind of liked that effect)

Well it seems we will be getting a video... probably for '9 Crimes'. McMoe reported this from the Norway radio session.

[quote=McMoe]Damien also told us that he was very tired after spending the last 3 days awake due to shooting a music video in London. Apparently, he had purposely done so to get into the "mood" of the video..QUOTE]

I actually like the video for the Blower's Daughter because it shows such an intimate close up of his face and he just looks very good in it.
