I think it's much more serious than this!

But thank you for sharing your view, Mister Tomarse

lol...It's not about hospital scrubs. You guys are silly.

The song is about terrorism. And not necessarilyworld wide terrorism. It's more about personal invasion of space and privacy. Don't take what Tori says too literally. She speaks in riddle. Take a looksy...

"I've just finished a song on my new album called 'The Power Of Orange Knickers' and the word that came up was 'terrorist'. Tricky one! What rhymes with 'terrorist'? Assonance is your best friend here. I thought about how people are using that word right now - whether it's people who run kingdoms or are killing people, or both. Maybe it could mean domestic terrorism, somebody you let in your house or your room or your body - invasion! Then I put the word 'kiss' in there to create a paradox as it's the furthest thing from 'terrorist'. I've always been a John Lennon person. My husband is a Paul McCartney person but I love a twist in the story. I love the tension of opposites. I love dancing with the devil - but the devil's a dictionary, not a dick!" [Word (UK) - February 2005]

I don't much like to interpret Tori's lyrics with others because Tori's lyrics will always mean something totally different for everyone. But...I thought you might want a little help getting started on your own theory. And remember...don't take her too literally.Edited by: Suede

Oh wow, thank you for that, Suede!

My theory was a bit different... Well I'm obviously wrong, but I thought Tori was singing about abortion. I know, sounds strange, but...

am I alone in this... the pill in the hand...a matter of complication... the girls that smile kindly then rip your life to pieces (nurses?)... And then she could be saying "kids" instead of "kiss"!

Ahem, well that was my feeling.

Beautiful anyway.

lol. We all have our own thoughts and that's what I love. But she's not saying kids. She is saying kiss.

I think it's just a wonderful song. Listening to it right now. I think Damien sounds great with Tori. He gives it a different depth.

Where in the world do you get that she's trying to get attention?

I guess she might seem like she's trying to get attention because she likes to be provocative. [I don't think she is though]

anyway, I think the line, "the power of orange knickers beneath my petticoat" is about being rebellious in secret and that not being out on the street demonstrating does not mean you don't care; rebellion can be more subtle than that.

this is from rolling stone today:

In "The Power of Orange Knickers," a duet with Irish crooner Damien Rice, the two sing over one another, their voices mingling in the sweeping, piano-led chorus. In the song, Amos writes of sensuality and jealousy, using political metaphors to explore the politics of romantic relationships, as in the loaded lyric, "Can somebody tell me/Who is this terrorist?"

"I was curious about how people were defining what a terrorist was," Amos explains. "[I wanted to] undress the word and really crawl inside the definition of it . . . People are using it to get the masses to agree with their agendas . . . [But] it can be a little pill that you're addicted to, or a person. And sometimes, for a woman, it's another woman."

thanks for that

reminds me of another canadian singer/songwriter, sarah slean, who also wrote about terrorism and love recently in the song 'day one':

I put my head back
Where it belongs up there in the clouds
I’m spreading love like
a terrorist now

O what a morning
O what a day to be alive
Sweet hope is glowing
in your glorious eyes

i like their way of integrating world politics and 'personal politics', if you can say so. and also the way they both try to use the word 'terrorist' in different meanings than the popular 'good guy - bad guy' terms. yay for artists painting colors back into black-white pictures!
