I have to do a little lecture (in oral form) til May 11th in Music. It should take 15 minutes and we shall not take a biography of an artist or a band. It should be more a "reportage" about a music genre or maybe soundtracks/film componists with audio examples. But now I have a problem...I can't decide which subject I should take. Maybe about the modern irish "alternative scene" (Gemma Hayes, Damien Rice etc.), 'modern' women in music (Tori Amos, PJ Harvey etc.) or 'sick' music (Slipknot, Marilyn Manson etc.). What would you suggest? And if you suggest, please name other artists or tell me ideas what else I can put in my lecture (escpecially concerning the irish thingy), tw'd be great. Okay, which artists (and audio examples!) should I take from the irish "alternative scene" and how would you describe this whole scene...you know, commonalities/differences etc.

No, paudy, it's just a little oral lecture for 15 minutes in Music. It would be the last mark I get for that.

i reckon you should stick with the irish scene theres plenty to talk about,

with artists like damien rice, paddy casey, damien dempsey, mundy, gemma hayes, the frames, bell x1, jerry fish

theres alot of varying styles in there music but the roots of all there styles are basically the same

oh but i like the 'sick' one though - maybe because it can involve psychological and political aspects (for instance using marilyn manson clips from 'bowling for columbine') - like: can you blame people's insane behaviour on the music they listen to? but maybe that'd be a longer lecture...

oh and the women's one is interesting too. a lot seems to have happened since women were just pretty girls singing 'shoo-wop' in the 60'ies. maybe a comparison between a pj or ani difranco tune and an old Motown lady pop tune.

does gemma hayes really belong to the 'alternative' music scene? to me she sounds pretty mainstream... well maybe a discussion on what's mainstream and what's alternative could be interesting. what is it really that makes something 'alternative' - alternative to what??

just brainstormin. quite dusty in there, really. either way i wish i could hear your 15 minutes - i'm sure it'll be very interesting regardless of what subject you chose. even in german

Yeah, the "sick" one is very interesting, but maybe too long for 15 minutes. So I skipped that.

You're right when you doubt the name "alternative", it's crappy, ok, but I just needed a "category" to make it easier for you to imagine what I wanted.

I would say that Gemma is more mainstream than...well Damien Rice, but she isn't smooth and has her own style.

"Alternative to smooth and dishonest music" that's what I would call it. Just a polemical tab, I don't care about that too much.

Omg... No way, I'm a lousy orator, but I think that is because I'm also too shy in front of a bunch of people. Thanks anyway. *prickling in the stomach* Edited by: Hendrik

yeah yeah, i know; my comment wasn't ment as a critique, more as something i was curious about. i like exploring what defines such categories, but that's just me.

hehe, the reaction i was looking for - i know what you mean about shyness. what helps me in such situations is usually to focus on the subject at hand rather than on all the people who are staring at me... oh well, really didn't mean to give a long speach of advice; i'll shut up instantl

You go, Hendrik! You'll be great!! (just imagine everybody else in their underwear-- unless you might find that too distracting! ) And alternative used to mean alternative (when I was a young 'un) but then became mainstream so the term is useless now, I agree. But really Henders-- I'd liketo hear it too and you'll do a great job, I'm sure!!

Other artists to mention? Would be great if someone can recommend me songs that I could pick up for the lecture. You know, songs that are well to represent the scene. Because I haven't heard e.g. Paddy Casey yet and I'm Not really into the other artists, excpeting Gemma and Damien. So can someone help me out?
