Transcribing lyrics for 9
I've been trying to update the lyrics page. I was hoping there'd be lyrics with the album, but there's not... so it gets kinda messy... and I'm hoping some of you might be able to help me get the lyrics as accurate as possible. I've uploaded what I have but I'm sure it's full of mistakes. So if you see anything you think is wrong, can you post here? Also, if you see any typos or spelling mistakes.
I especially need help with the following bits... In 9 Crimes, are Damien and Lisa saying "Is that alright, yeah?" or "Is that alright with you?" most of the time? In Animals is it: "I hope we didn't break yet" or "I hope we didn't break it" In Elephant: "What's the point of this song? Or even singing?" or something else In Rootless: What on earth is he saying in the line... "we fake the... and fracture the times" And all the chorus for Rootless... "I said leave it, leave it, leave it / There's nothing in you" ... doesn't seem right at all... In Dogs, "And she gets splashed in rain" (or something else?)... (On a side note, it's funny to see the old lyrics, the way he used to sing it live... "She lives with a little dog / That's gone just a little mad / She's got a wolf to keep her warm / If ever she's feeling sad) In Me, My Yoke + I: "Won't you read my, Won't you read my, Won't you read my, Won't you read my book...(inaudible)" Can anyone make it out? In Accidental Babies: "The lack of space for the light-hearted in the boom that beats our drum" - Is it "boom"? Thanksssss! |

Accidental Babies
Damien Rice Well I held you like a lover Happy hands And elbow in the appropriate place And we ignore our others Happy plans That delicate look upon your face A mind crystal hardened Hurting parts of your garden With no room for a pardon In a place where no one knows What we have done Do you come Together ever with him? Is he dark enough? Enough to see your light? Do you brush your teeth before you kiss? Do you miss my smell? And is he bold enough to take you on? Do you feel like you belong? And does he drive you wild? Or just mildly free? What about me? Well you held me like a lover Sweaty hands And my foot in the appropriate place And we use cushions to cover Happy glands In mild issue of our disgrace Our bodies pressed and hardened Turning our desire in With no room for a pardon In a place where no one knows What we have done Well I know I make you cry And I know sometimes you wanna die But do you really feel alive without me? If so, be free If not, leave him for me Before one of us has accidental babies We aren't free Do you come Together ever with him? Is he dark enough? Enough to see your light? Do you brush your teeth before you kiss? Do you miss my smell? Is he bold enough to take you on? Do you feel like you belong? And does he drive you wild? Or just mildly free? What about me? What about me? What about...? |

Animals Were gone
Damien Rice Woke up and for the first time The Animals were gone It's left this house empty now Not sure if I belong Yesterday you asked me To write you a pleasant song I'll do my best now But you've been gone for so long The window's open now And the winter settles in We'll call it Christmas When the adverts begin I love your depression And I love your double chin I love most Everything You bring to this offering (?) I know that I've left you In places of Despair I know that I've loved you So please thrown down your hair (?) At night I dream without you And hope I don't wake up Cos waking up without you Is like drinking from an empty cup Woke up and for the first time The animals were gone Our clocks are ticking now So before our time is gone We can get a house And some boxers and all along (on the long?) We can make babies and accidental songs I know I've been a liar and I know I've been a fool I hope we didn't break it But I'm Glad we broke the rules My cave is deep now Yet your light is shinning through I cover my eyes Still all I see is you |

Emmett,
In 9 Crimes, are Damien and Lisa saying "Is that alright, yeah?" or "Is that alright with you?" most of the time? It's both rhetorical questions. "Is that alright with you?" and "Is that alright? Yeah." Which is why the last line of the entire song is just a solitary "No". In Animals is it: "I hope we didn't break yet" or "I hope we didn't break it" I said it was "yet". The only line I'd change of yours is "we could get a house and some boxers and on the lawn..." basically I think he's saying we'll get two dogs (an attempt to re-populate the pets that are now missing which in the opening of the song previously signified their domestic bliss) plus there's the witty idea that making babies on the lawn is a way of taking a cue from the doggies. In Elephant: "What's the point of this song? Or even singing?" or something else. That part's correct. The one line I'd change is to "as you sit within your picture" (no question mark) One other interesting thing about the studio version is that it really sounds like he's saying "so why would she take me thorny?". Re-listening to the live versions I notice it now there, too. The recent Norwegian radio show especially. In Rootless: What on earth is he saying in the line... "we fake the... and fracture the times" I agree that it's "don't stain your bed" and "fake the thoughts". Also verse two is "I know not of you but of all that's been told And all the chorus for Rootless... "I said leave it, leave it, leave it / There's nothing in you" ... doesn't seem right at all... Here's what I've always believed the chorus actually is: So f*ck you, f*ck you, f*ck you And all we've been through I said leave it, cleave it, bleed it: There's nothing in you. And if you hate me, hate me, hate me Then hate me so good That you can let me out, let me out, let me out Of this hell when you're around I've also always said that he's definitely alternating between saying "Let me out" and "Let me up" at different points but no one has ever agreed with me before about that. In Dogs, "And she gets splashed in rain" : As stated by others I think it's "I become a child, man, when she moves my world/ And she gets splashed in paint" In Me, My Yoke + I: "Won't you read my, Won't you read my, Won't you read my, Won't you read my book...(inaudible)" Can anyone make it out? Still just have the streaming version now so I'll have to get back to you on this after I can slow it down/replay that section over and over etc. In Accidental Babies: "The lack of space for the light-hearted in the boom that beats our drum" - Is it "boom"? Yup, it's boom. Also, in "SDW" It's There's times when I was broke when you stood strong. Every single time they say "face, it's all wet". BTW, everyone should play that song simultaneously w/ "Cold Water"! The effect is almost unbearably powerful and reveals an extraordinary level of variation rather than the expected similarity. One other important thing. In "Grey Room" it's: "Cause if I squeeze my grape/ Then I drink my wine. The line doesn't make sense otherwise. He's essentially saying he lives with the consequences of his decisions, however destructive. P.S. In general, I don't comment on the (mostly) lack of punctuation of your transcribing style but the "Have I still got you" lines should definitely all have question marks.

Emmett,
On re-listening to "RT" on both the album and recent live versions I'm now in agreement with the person who said it was "we fake the farce".

I was asking in another tread, are you sure about the 'I could be strong' in the distorted part in Elephant?? Doesn't sound like that in the Norwegian thing... more like 'I could be true?'

thanks for all your help guys. there's nothing i hate more than transcribing lyrics, so i really appreciate it!
i've made some of the changes and i'll go back over it all when i get some more time. sometimes it's almost impossible to hear exactly what's being said. borneoman, it does sound like 'i could be true' in the norwegian one... hmm... but there's a definite s sound at the start of the word in the recorded version... i bet he did that just to make it hard for me to transcribe thanks for all the work spamlet, i don't know how you do it! sorry i haven't put much effort into the punctuation. i originally didn't really want to put in too much punctuation because sometimes it's ambiguous and i didn't want to put in my interpretation... but there are definitely places where it needs to be fixed and i'll do that the next time i get some time. |

Hi Administrator, in the song 'Rootless Tree' I think the lyric goes 'Killers, we invent and believe' as opposed to 'Killers reinvent and believe'.

Jon, there's a very clear "r" hit hard in all the live versions. I agree that he doesn't stress it as solidly in the studio version. Listen to the other ones, though, and you'll hear it. Everyone-Also in "RT"(in the cool semi-hidden "love you" vein): almost buried at the very end during their round, Lisa actually hauntingly adds a whisper sung "help me" at least once. Probably came about from the two of them trading off between singing "Hell" and "let me". "BD2/Elephant": Borneo and Emmett, you are both correct! In the live ones he sings "I could be true yeah". In the recorded version there's a prolonged "s" at the begining of the word so he officially sings "I could be strue, yeah!" Maybe he meant to say "so true"? Everyone always mentions him leaving the occasional 'bum note' in. Guess he doesn't mind a missed lyric either! Naw, I'm just kidding. Whether it was an oversight or a heat of the moment in the booth thing he does sing "I could be strong, yeah" on the album version. So dealer's choice, Emmett, since he's never sang it that way before or since. In the same way, live he sings "Well, I could throw her out" instead of what sounds much more like "throw it out" on the record. "The Rat within the Grain"- I finally heard the studio version and can concur with the word in question being not "out" as it really quite sounded live but "now" which everyone else had correctly thought. Emmett, I noticed you didn't have this song up yet so for convenience's sake here it is again: This would not have happened if I hadn't missed my plane. I would've been there when they told you I'm the rat within the grain. Within this big misunderstanding now, I'm being misunderstood. I'm thinkin' someone's trying to fu*k with me and set fire to my wood. Well I wouldn't want you to want to be wanted by me. I wouldn't want you to worry you'd be drowned within my sea. I only wanted to be wonderful, and wonderful is true. In truth, I only really wanted to be wanted by you. It's a stupid situation now where everything goes wrong. If you can't tell if I am lying: then you do not belong. In my bed, go rest your head upon the bones of a bigger man. And he can cover you with rockwool and you can close up like a clam. 'cause I wouldn't want you to want to be wanted by me. I wouldn't want you to worry you'd be drowned within my sea. I only wanted to be wonderful, and wonderful is true. In truth, I only really wanted to be wanted by you. So go play with your piano and write a mediocre song About this shell of mediocrity And pretend there's nothing wrong. I never thought you were a chicken sh*t: I never thought of you at all. Until you asked me to be part of it And now you're showing me a wall. I wouldn't want you to want to be wanted by me. I wouldn't want you to worry you'd be drowned within my sea. I only wanted to be wonderful and wonderful is true. In truth, I only really wanted to be wanted by you. In truth, I only really wanted to be wanted by you. Lada da da etc... In truth, I only really wanted to be wanted by you. There are numerous other unreleased tracks which I've painstakingly transcribed scattered all about the forum. I could also re-post a few of those in this thread for you to add. Yes or no?

Thanks for the corrections, guys.
It was just the way I heard it on the album, because I haven't heard a live version. My mistake! |

As a rule it's fairly silly to follow the live versions when transcribing the actual LP lyrics, mainly because Damien does like to mix them around abit. He sang "Please slow down your hair" in "The Animals Were Gone" on Jools last night, - He did it a few times when I saw him live too.
Maybe he likes to catch people out so people can't sing along. Or maybe he does what I do, and when you're singing occasionally sing the wrong word because they sound phonetically similar in your mind.
