Default Child, a man and a silly dog

is this song an original or a cover? If it is a cover where might I find the original?

I've been listening to The Professor/La Fille Danse >Child a man and a silly dog for the past two weeks straight now, and oh wow what a beautiful tune.

It's an original - Damien says it's old. Don't think there's a studio recording of it - just live bits.

i think it's way back from the juniper days, and the correct title is 'child, man, silly dog' (w/o the and's)

Damo's really a surprising artist. You hear a title like this one, "The Girl who Does Yoga" or "Accidental Babies" and you're fully expecting them to be goofy little joke filled throwaways. Then you hear them and they're 3 of the most poignant, achingly beautiful things imaginable.

As Cille said it's got to be quite early since it's got an entire line from Volcano in it: "and what I give to you is just what I'm going through". There's also the end section that's very similar in concept to a stanza of one of my all time favorite Damo songs, "Grey Room".

This is exemplary proof of Mr. Rice's genius. Like musical haiku. Deftly sketching a mere handful of lines down on a napkin he somehow manages to paint a masterpiece. Saying and doing in just over one minute more than many could say in an entire album, and most in their entire careers.

Default Oh yes and here are the lyrics...

Since I don't believe they've ever been transcribed before (e.e. cummings style seems a great fit):

i've been
a child,
a man,
and
a
silly
dog.

i've been
a bull,
a boy,
and
a
beast.

i've been
a child,
a man,
and
a
silly
dog.

a bone
on which
i
feast.

and what
i give
to
you
is
what
i'm
goin'
through:

it's
a picture
of
the holes
in
my hand.

and what
i have
to do
is
destroy
my youth:

the
gates
are
closin'
as
i'm frozen.

i've been
a child,
a man,
and
a
silly
dog.

i've been
a broken
boat,
a
whore.

i've been
a child,
a man,
and
a
silly
dog.

well,
give
me
more,
more,
more.

and all
i give
to
you
is...
well
it's
a piece
of truth:

it's a picture
of
the holes
in
my hand.

and what
i have
to do
is
destroy
my youth:

the
gates
are
closin'
as
i'm frozen

in time.

remember that i did mention it was like haiku.

Come to think of it I did type up those lyrics before, but I guess Emmett never put them up!

I'm sure that you can get a copy of a show where he plays it. Maybe on one of the ftp's or dimeadozen.org if you want to download it.

I'll e-trade it to you if you happen to have something I don't have but that seems unlikely since there's only about 4 songs now, but PM me your list...

The only recording where I've personally heard it yet is Upper Darby, Pennsylvania (April 15, 2004) which is a great quality one.

That was apparently the very next show he played after I saw him live for the first time at Pittsburgh's legendary unplugged Easter show with my pal Amanda (who luckily taped it so now you get to hear why it was one of the best ever).

It was also only 9 days before I saw him for the second time in arguably the heaviest rockin' show of his career: my hometown of Cleveland, OH at the Odeon.

Easily the most jaw dropping live music performance I've ever been to and one of the greatest evenings of my life since my girlfriend and I hung out talking w/ him afterwards. It's an absolute tragedty though, that to this day no tape of it is known to exist.
