Default Glen Hansard

Glen's solo record is due out in June, produced by Thomas Bartlett (Doveman).
http://www.hotpress.com/Glen-Hansard...l?new_layout=1

Glen Hansard to release solo album
Glen Hansard is set to release his first solo album. As yet untitled, the record is slated for a June launch by Anti, and will be released on the Epitaph label.

The album is produced by Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), who also plays keyboards and piano on the record. Glen Hansard was one of a number of guest vocalists on Dovemsn's 2009 album, alongside Martha Wainwright. Norah Jones and Matt Berringer of The National.

"I've known Thomas for years," Glen told Hot Press. "But the idea for the record came out of nothing really. Thomas has this gig in the Poisson Rouge – he does this evening there, The Burgundy Sessions. There's a house band, and it's the kind of night where you can bring a song in, and play it, shouting out the chords to the guys as you go along."

Among the regular guests at the session are Antony Hegarty of Antony and The Johnsons, St. Vincent and guys from The National. Glen took a song in – with unexpected consequences...

"It's a very interesting space creatively. I sang the song and it went so well that I said to Thomas: 'could we book a studio tomorrow and record a couple of songs with these musicians'. It was amazing. We went in – and recorded nine songs in the session. And those songs are the basis of the record."

The album sprang at a more seminal level from Glen's desire to take time out, to experience different things.

"Last September, after we'd finished the last Swell Season gig of the tour, I said to the guys in the band that I needed to take some time out without gigging," Glen explained. "I was thinking, you know, the soil can go fallow if you don't give it a rest. And so they said, whatever you have to do, that's fine. I wanted to do a New York year – and so all my spare time has been spent there."

In the end, the musical pause has produced a burst of creativity.

"I hadn't planned to do a Glen Hansard record," he said. "Even though, in a way, it had been in the back of my mind all along. But now it's done. We've got the artwork. And the songs that happened at that first session are the nucleus of the record."

Among the titles being considered are Become – and Repose.

"There is an interview in that thought alone," Glen laughed. "But I was taking some time out, just to look around and experience things and the songs happened in that time of repose. Which is why i like the idea as a title.

"We tend to take less and less time out just to stare into space. Or to think and reflect. You see a couple in a restaurant and when she goes to the toilet, he's on his mobile phone straight away. So that is something I've been thinking about."

^I prefer shouty Glen, that's what he's great at.

I still have hope for the album, but I'M a bit concerned that it'll be another mellow, held-back piece.

I fear that he's growing old.

got the feeling that the songs I liked the most that he was playing live didn't make the cut for the album

Did you hear "Take the Heartland" off the Hunger games OST? The old man can still scream alright.

Have I missed something? What new songs has he been playing? I can only recall one from Bonnaroo (or some other festival) last year, but are there anymore?

^check youtube, I think I found them all expect the Wolves one... during the last solo tour, Glen was playing 7/8 newies each night...

this is a clip of It's Coming, imho it was the best, very slow, on piano... so you all probably gonna hate it

Listen, it's not that I don't like slow singer-songwriter Glen, in the piano, etc. I do! But I prefer him when screaming and yelling in a Frames song, that's all.
Don't you think maybe there's some hope for some of the songs though, he might've changed the names to some?

And yes Races is a Frames oldie.

Maria, but for instance when he does Leave or Say it to Me Now solo, isn't that intense enough? You also think Marketa was his Yoko Ono as someone (David?) said once...

I don't think there's gonna be retitles cos we know all the ones that made the album cut except the one titled something about the Wolves... which doesn't seem to fit any of the excluded ones (Return, Lucia, Alice, Moving On)

and this is another one of my recent faves not on the album... the one he gave away to M5...

listening to the first song in that list glo posted, it reminds me of José González.... It's definitely not screaming emotional Glen, but it's still soulful glen.

been listening on repeat all afternoon!!! really like it, especially You Will Be Come + The Storm is Coming... probably the 2 slowest ones in the album... which is pretty slow all the way...

not sure if Frames fans are gonna like it, cos it's not very rock... so this sounds to me like the Swell Season minus Marketa. and a bit more inspried that the Swellies album 2

^Someone at the Frames board wrote this, and I kinda have to agree:

Quote:
Glen is in danger of making predictable music for grown ups with two kids and a dog.
As I've stated before, I miss the shouting and the erratic strumming, these two are the main reasons I listen to Glen Hansard. It's as if Vyv was playing the drums while wearing a burqa.

maybe the album should have been called simply "Repose"

great session x Rolling Stone... he also does the Hunger Games song that he gave to M5...

Hmm I don't hate it but I'll get bored of it sooner than later. It sounds a lot like the second Swellies' record, which is not the best... I'm with David, I would love more Frames-like Glen. What's the verdict on Races? I feel like it's sooo over produced here, no? Maybe I'm just used to the acoustic, dressed down live versions we've had up until now....

Also, there's already a studio release of High Hope on that Music of Ireland compilation that came out a bit ago.
