How just plain ole' recordings sound better with Damien Rice in it. Beautiful!

This super shocked me. The crowd became weird very quickly haha.

I I can't make out all the lyrics - what makes it clear it's about an interracial couple beyond the "maybe we can go somewhere and kiss (etc!) in the streets"? Did he give it that title or tell a story about it?

Was this song prompted by someone in the audience? I'll try to figure out the lyrics this tomorrow, after the Beacon. It seems like he's singing from both perspectives.

It sort of came from him asking the crowd to yell out topics, things got strange very quickly, and he then went into this. I guess he was feeling inspired? haha.

Here's what I can make out:

Waiting for you
Behind the wall of tears
Behind the wall
Scared you
Because because because
Because my mama said
I should be careful about you
But, my mama said
The neighbors all (or are?)…(doesn’t seem to finish this)
I said bye bye baby baby
I said bye bye baby
But maybe we can go and grow somewhere else
Or keep a frame to … (something obviously funny but I can’t make it out)
We can hold hands
Kiss and make out and maybe even F*** in the street
Will our neighbors still have a problem (?)
We can have such a long (?) time
And I said why why not baby baby
We can find a way out
Why not why why not baby
We can work it out with them (?)
This for the song for tonight
In this dim dim light
In the Ryman
With a craning (One definition of craning is “to hesitate at danger, difficulty”)
That will sat- sat- satisfy you
To not want...
Yet to want to please you (don't get this?)

Lots of question marks, so clarify as you see fit. Spamlet is really the master at this.

Great effort, but I could see why people were uncomfortable. It's clunky. Maybe he doesn't know a lot about the subject matter...?

Could you say more about how things got strange? Others have said the same thing, and I'm very curious what actually happened or what was yelled out that felt strange?

I love the idea of yelling for topics, but only a small number of performers can pull it off. I'd say Damien pulled it off, but I can only imagine what else people yelled out!

On the topic of this improv, whether he's got subject matter experience or not, it's a very touchy topic that I can imagine as he was improv-ing, he was trying to be careful. You don't want to say the wrong thing and really offend people you had no intention of offending!

It's a brave thing for a performer to do, kudos to Damo!

Thanks for taking the time to listen and write it out!

i know it´s only an improv song, but it sounds quite profound to me... perhaps, it´s due to the story that popped up in my mind... i have a phd in imagination, i must say.

He also asked for a choice of 3/4 time or 4/4. As far as to why things got strange-I basically didn't expect it and it was an odd moment. At first I thought maybe he was going to go into something else, Creep maybe, and he formed it into a full song. As was also mentioned, it's rather clunky and wonky. Song titles were other things that were yelled out, like Coconut Skins, and he said "I asked for topics, not song titles". So I guess he really felt moved to do this. I've also not seen Damo before, just a huge fan and have seen many shows online. This could be a regular thing for all I know, but it felt somewhat awkward, to me.

I can understand why it felt awkward, and thanks for that additional info. Still sounds really cool to me, and brave on his part because it would be so easy for it to go so wrong...

"To not want...
Yet to want to please you"

That makes sense now...

I've seen almost 15 shows now and only experienced the improv thing once before live (I think). Happy Green Joe at MSG! Amazing and not happy at all...

Yeah, I agree with that line having to do with that. It was strange, but I think it's a cool example of how much fun he's having on this tour. From what I can tell by reading about shows on here, he seems to be in a lovely humor for most shows. Did My Bubba sit in with him anywhere else? They didn't here, but I sort of expected them to.

I can definitely hear the word "pee" in the funny part

Thanks for catching it, I build my own version onto yours. I'm not saying it's more accurate. Just my two cents.
This is what I hear:

Waiting for you
Behind the wall of tears
And butterfly evolved
Scared your (something that sounds like cuff?)
Because because because
Cause my mama said
I should be careful of girls like you
Cause my mama said
The neighbours are...

I said bye bye baby baby
I said why why baby

But maybe we can go and move somewhere else
Where people (?) to big (?) and pee ( Ok, this seems pretty random)
We'll hold hands, kiss and make out
And maybe even f*** in the street (Well he is pretty explicit here )
Where our neighbours still have ottoman (a kind of a couch/bed)
We can have such a loveable time

And I said why why not baby
Maybe we can find a way out
Why not why why not baby
We can work it out again?

This was the song for tonight
In this dim dim light
In the Ryman
We were crying but
We were sad sad satisfied
In need to not want
Yet to want to please you

Soooo interesting! I wonder if he remembers these improvs weeks or months later? Like if anyone asks him about this, I wonder if he'll remember it and know what he was thinking about... or just stare at the person blankly...?
