Is That It My Friend appreciation thread
I really really really love this little song!!!! And I really really really hope it makes it to the new album (whenever that may be). I think the melody is fantastic, the lyrics are beautiful... usually I'm not crazy on trumpets but love the mouth-trumpet at the end
So do you love it or do you love it??? What inspired me to start this thread is that today I rediscovered this amazing live version from Bristol 07: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8URRD...eature=related Absolutely stellar performance, which gets even better if you listen it as part of the 30 minute-3 song jam he did with Insane > Eskimo > Is that It My Friend http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HegQ_...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VStc4...eature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8URRD...eature=related Looks like Damien's been working on the song for a while cos he played it first in Madison 2004 with slightly different lyrics, and then a bunch of times during the 9 tour, including the one I witnessed in LA in which Lisa did sing the 2nd verse (or tried, cos she forgot the lyrics)... these are the lyrics by the way (thanks Spamlet for the input back in the day): Is that it, my friend? We've come to the end? Only 2 days now With letters to send To the Prince of the desert. The prints in the sand... Did he ask for your love? Did he ask for your hand? Is that it my friend The end of it all Did you wait till I break Did you wait till I fall I was lost in your river Now I’ve come to a dam I question the boy I question the man And I long to be with you And I long to be free How I long to be with you Not for my... Jealousy Is that it my friend Just say goodnight Well I hope you sleep well I hope you sleep tight I hope in your dreams That he loves your eyes Like I did Just for awhile Is that it my friend The end of it all Did you wait till I break Did you wait till I fall I was lost in your river Now I’ve come to a dam I question the boy I question the man And I long to be with you And I long to be free Yes I long to be with you Not for my Jealousy Well I’m alright Now Yes I’m all I’m alright Now and this is how the 1st verse was first time around in Madison (courtesy SisterMidnight): Is that it my friend Come to the end Of a beautiful day Where I can pretend I can open these ears I can open my eyes I can scrape the bottom And still touch the sky

Well Marti, you know I'm a sucker for lyrics that play with the imagination and that conjure up vivid images. So I love the imagery of this prince of the desert. I have a whole little sketch playing out in my mind with the mysterious figure of this guy that Damien refers to as the prince. Tee-hee!!!!
But what - if at all - is the background story to having two days to write letters? Do you or anyone else perhaps know? Quote:

^I think the dam represents that the relationship is over
^^Nope, Sharmin. The first recording we got is from the Orpheum in Dec 07. He had also played it in Dublin before in 07. Actually, imo the best recording is the one Dave did in Boston!!!! But this one from Bristol with Insane is stellar too!!

Well the tune is beautiful, but reading the lyric I don't care for it much. Sorries! I really think Damien needs to wrap his lyrics around something other than his own broken heart.
But if I had to choose between those two options I'd say I love it.

Yes yes, my trend of thought was along those same lines.
The river symbolising abundance, a seemingly endless flow. While a dam is a mere reservoir. :-/

I do have to agree with you that if he, or any other artist for that matter, would like to have a fruitful artistic and creative life, then they should broaden the scope of their subject matter.

*spams thread*
Sorry chaps! But I should also add that there are songs like Lonely Soldier and Baby Sister that I absolutely love, because I think they speak of issues that transcend Damien's broken heart over a girl.

But he's already expanding his scope, imo he's matured and changed a lot since the early songs about masturbation and feck you feck you, the latest songs show a far more mature songwriting in my opinion...

*tip-toes back into the thread... again*
Marti, are you talking to me or to cille? Or, perhaps to both of us? Just checking! I'm not sure. *sneaks out*

^Both.
But going back on topic, I was thinking that this song might actually end up on album 3 and might even be recorded by now. cos you remember, one year ago, this guy posted that Damien was sorta auditioning for a 'wind-section', so trumpets and so on. Can't remember exactly the purpose of the whole thing, but might be to record the trumpet part in this song Wishful thinking maybe...

Ha! O.k. I wasn't sure. But yeah hey, from my previous post, I'm actually in agreement with you there regarding Damien, in particular. It's just that I find that artists only really hold my attention if they can broaden their scope.
