O is one of the best albums of the decade

As the decade comes to a close, I gotta say this album is right up there, on my list of top albums of the decade, definitely one of my favorite albums of all time. I remember the first time, I heard Damien, it was the video for Volcano, woke up early, and VH1 had their Top 20 countdown in 2003, and that video was on there. It had an impact on me. I just love the sound, its sparse and bare, but its honest, emotional and powerful.

O is one of those records for me at least that conjurs up visions and emotions and feelings, just by playing it. For me, I think of windswept piers, of the coast on a cold grey day, of summers where I had no cares and troubles and where I had no worries. It is able to dredge up my emotions from those years.

I love everything about the album. The songs themselves, the lyrics, the lack of a "huge sound", but the instruments that are there are powerful. The albums as sparse as a barren forest, but at the same time is extravagent with the operatic sounds heard on Eskimo.

What was the impact of the record? Well, it made Damien and Lisa stars, and sort of was the first taste of one of the decades biggest trends, which was the sensitive singer songwriter, the Starbucks sound if you will. Josh Radin, Jason Mraz. Ray Lamontagne, Jonathan Rice, Brett Dennen, Alexi Murdoch, Fionn Regan, even Glen Hansard all talented musicians, who are doing their thing, but all definitely heard O at some point.

Will Damien ever top O? I dont know. But as album number three is nearing, I cant wait to find out.
