I was worried it was just going to wash over me, too. Because it's been so long since their last album, I've been getting bored by the existing Coldplay tracks, but X&Y (on first listen, I only got it last night) sounds pretty strong.

The sleeve's a bit pretentious, but you have to expect that, and the way the album appears to have been randomly split into two halves (side X, and - shock! - side Y) is slightly odd. But the songs are good - "What If" stands out for me at the moment, probably because it scares me!! "Swallowed In The Sea" is also pretty haunting, and "Speed Of Sound" is the obvious (but not the only) up-beat track. "Til Kingdom Come", the not-very-well-hidden track is also a nice ending to the album.

I love it! I think that yes, it is rather typical of Coldplay, but on the whole it's another outstnding album from Coldplay. It rocks!

Its really good. Definiately not as immidiately good as thier first two, but it grows on you each listen. Don't write it off the first time you listen to it.

It's funny hearing peoples reaction here, I've felt that while it sounds like Coldplay, they have a definite change in sound from their previous albumns.

I think it is alright...
However, I thought their last album was good but massively over hyped. There first album was very good (Although Yellow was played to death).
I guess, they just don't move me emotionally very much which is what I'm looking for in a great album. Having said that, its still better than 99% of albums and songs doing the rounds on commercial radio.

i think it's pretty strong... it starts off strong at least... towards the end gets a tad boring... i still dig it immensely though... they will never top parachutes though... what a fabulous album that was...

I think its certainly a great album - a newish sound with some really adventurous tracks on it. However I somewhat don't think it matches up to a Rush of Blood to the Head -Though, if X & Y is compared with the other 2 albums then it is bound to be different and in my own opinion, not as good. All in all though a fantastic album with some great songs on it

It's so different. Really great though, my favorite song is The Hardest Part and X&Y!

For me, the most outstanding track is 'fix you' (but I'm enjoying the whole album really)

My thoughts exactly...

Did anyone see them on Jonathon Ross last week? They were doing In My Place and in the middle Chris starts singing 'ding ding ding ding ding ding'

'Fix You' is a definite stand-out track. Overall the album is ok, maybe its a grower. I don't think anything Coldplay will do can ever really come close to 'Parachutes', or 'Amsterdam' from 'A Rush of Blood...'
(completely agree Jen!)

To be honest I was disappointed after first listening to the album...

i think the mention in the 'what's cold' section of the Irish Times magazine today just about sums up how i feel about it atm :
'Coldplay's new album
Or rather the fact that everybody is talking about how similar it is to the first two. What did they expect, a Mongolian folk album?'

lol .. but yeah i haven't listened to the album yet..complete lack of money!

yeah i also am moneyless, but i heard the new track quite a few times on the radio and it sounds lush. between rush of blood to the head and parachutes there is no comparison however. They seem like a completely different band since they made it with parachutes. when parachutes was first out i didn't know many people who liked them, and i just loved chris martin and his content expression, their watery purity was just so cool, and i loved how querky they were and how they didn't try to be anything other than what they were. I think rush of the blood seemed allot more depressed although i still loved it and think it was one of the best albums this year. Their whole minimalist thing was just quite cold and polished. I really wanna buy the new album to check it out, but i'm sure it'll be a lovely cd, but it's not going to be able to replicate the adolescent truth of parachutes. I don't think they're trying to anyway.

i really like the record! my favourite so far is talk! i'm sure the most will say this is the weakest album of coldplay, well i don't know...they recorded 3 really great albums and this is really not easy! but i think they sound more and more like U2...

just got it. the album does grow on one; i can't get square one's chorus out of my head now

there are two distinctive sounds i feel, divided into x and y; the x'es kinda veer towards Radiohead KidA-esque spacescape whereas the y'es sound more earthbound, if you know what i mean... i'm not too sure i do haha

Edit: Okay, ^ that is either the most profound or the most idiotic post I've yet posted. Forgive the sonambulent.
What I mean I feel there are longer musical interludes between the sung lines, which is to say the music takes a little more precedence in this album than in the previous two, especially in the songs marked X'es, hence giving it the sound landscapes akin to Kid_A's.
