Cille, he does indeed have verse chorus, verse chorus in some songs, but only few... hardly any. By that idea, Nick Drake are (all songs have verse chorus etc).

Revelate, go off if you dont like it fils a puitan

What is pop anyway? How many records does one have to sell, to become popular?

It's like Cille said: D.R. is hardly atonal avantgarde jazz and I bet most of the D.R. fans couldn't listen to music like that, and yet they are blathering about the word "pop" as if it would be disease-ish.

Wrong sentence. Right sentence:

you know, this is getting exhausting.
If you want to do your polls, fair enough.
But these arguments are starting to become a real nuisance. I've stumbled across several topics now that were in the middle of an argument.
And that's not what it should be like.
And especially not if you start calling someone names.
It's not necessary, it's insulting and it doesn't make any sense so just stop doing it and carry on with your topic instead. Otherwise I wonder why you started it in the first place.

you should have made it so you can see who voted. because i frankly havent a clue who would vote for yes.

maybe if he WAAASSS popular you could call him 'pop'. but hes not!!!!!

and the only song that comes to mind is Unplayed Piano but that was completely different situation.

But...Damien "not popular", Timmée? Are you serious? Maybe four years ago, he wasn't...but 2006?

yes i'm serious. generally he's not in the public eye and i think thats mainly what would constitute "popular". and even more so in 2006!!!!! i mean he hasnt released an album in 4 years, i'd say that a lot of the listeners of the last album haven't listened to him in ages. meaning that he wouldnt be in their heads. meaning he wouldnt be popular.

i dont think so

It's true he hasn't released an album in 4 years and he's not as famous as Britney Spears, but I think you underestimate the power of that "Closer" film last year and what it did to Damien's popularity. Even my sister knows him now (due to his song in the film and that Blower's daughter video in the extras section of the DVD) and that says a lot. And now imagine how many people have seen "Closer" (by now).

1) DAMIEN is not POP

2) POP doesn't necessarily mean Popular... and at the same time Popular does not mean POP... musically speaking... Bob Dylan is popular and he does not make pop music, same for millions

I just think of the line in High Fidelity: "Do I listen to pop music because I'm depressed, or am I depressed because I listen to pop music?"

So what is pop music? I think its come to mean something more than just popular music.

And who cares if Damien becomes one of the most famous musicians of his generation (ahem, early Bob, Cat and James)? As long as the music stays good, I'm happy. Ok, one downside I can think of is that it would make it more difficult to get tix to his shows and they'd be in bigger venues. Other than that, good on him if he can be described as popular.

I don't think he's quite there yet, though. I was in Dublin for Vicar Street and no one knew who I was talking about when I said that I was in town for a Damien Rice concert. No one.

oh no, pop is dead
long live pop
it died an early death by back catalogue

and now you know it gets you nowhere
and now you know, you realise

oh no, pop is dead,
it just gave up
we raise the dead but they won't stand up
and radio has salmonella
and now you know you're gonna die
he left this message for us

so what pop is dead
it's no great loss
so many facelifts, his face flew off
the emperor really has no clothes on
and his skin is peeling off
oh no, pop is dead, long live pop
one final line of coke to jerk him off

pop is NOT dead! he's alive and well

i think there are different definitions between continents.. in america when we say pop we mean britney and justin and the like, our more general term is rock for popular music..
