Great reading!!! Never heard of this #1 band... I thought it was gonna be between Toad The Wet Sprocket and Hootie & The Bowlfish!!! I find Smashing Pumpkins pretty silly too...
Can you think of other stupid names? What about Transvision Vamp? or Voice of the Beehive?

why is everybody always hating on toad the wet sprocket? anything monty python related is cool in my book, and they're a good band!
so !!! is pronounced chk-chk-chk? hmm.. i think most band names are ridiculous. i hate it when they purposefully misspell words though, as if it's more memorable that way or something ps - simon, your avi is driving me buggy. buggy.. get it? ha! no, seriously. *shudders* |

^ good ones
here are a few, not necessarily bad but odd: lynyrd skynyrd (what?) alien sex fiend cherry poppin daddies (um..) the circle jerks anthrax barenaked ladies (they're NOT ladies, nor are they barenaked) ween dead milkmen (i almost said dead kennedy's but that was actually a brilliant name) bow wow wow wall of voodoo edema (it's a medical condition people) jack off jill pee shy squirrel nut zippers (ouch?) some of my fave weird names are local bands tho: house of large sizes ziploc and the incredible sandwich boys the pirhana brothers jif and the choosy mothers (i love this one) i always thought fubar would be a good name for a band, but apparently some death metal band from the netherlands stole it |

I'm suprised nobody mentioned The Flying Burrito Brothers. Bloc Party is pretentious as hell. Everytime I see the word "bloc" I throw up a little.

I think the worst band names are those manufactured ones, like boy band names or idol winners. The only really hidious one i can think of right now is the danish pop stars winners 'EyeQ'. Yikes!

Well, if it ain't your birthname you're performing under, they're all "manufactured". But yes, there's manufactured and then there's crap-o-factured. We had an Idols-like band here called K-otic. They crashed and burned pretty quickly.
Another idiotic bandname: Sunn O)))

^^ yeah, but that was bull**** though, because prince is his actual name (given to him by his parents) and when he split with his record company they tried to say that they owned his name, so he literally was not allowed by law to use his own name..

From wiki: They came up with the intentionally provocative name 'Cherrypoppin' Daddies' as a campy homage to the cartoonish risque of the early Dixieland recordings that had inspired them.

Here's a couple of pretty strange ones:
Quiet Riot Pretty Poison Death Cab for Cutie Pet Shop Boys The Who Twisted Sister Jimmy Eat World Rusted Root (one of my favorite bands) This all makes me wonder: are there any good band names left, or have they all been taken? What would you name a band if you started one? |

naming bands is pretty hard once you actually put some thought into it, thats why most of them are pretty crazy. as a band name i would want something that captures the essence of our music, is relevant, means something to us as a band, and sounds cool but doesn't sound cheesy and over thought.
so when your brainstorming with that kind of criteria i can see how people might not want to over think it and just go with something that will make some headway

few crazy local ones:
Skeptik Tank Vicious Dig The Shower Scene Barntown Water Tastes Like Blood but one of my favourite band names ever is: First Death In Nova Scotia (after the Elizabeth Bishop poem) ...and, to explain Death Cab for Cutie - it's named after a song. can't remember who sung it though. but yeah, tis a weird name alright... oh, another funny local one is Steer Clear ...sounds a little too much like advice :P
