SETLIST
THE BEACON - NEW YORK, NY 4/16/04 1. Professor/La Fille Danse 2. Volcano 3. Woman Like A Man 4. Older Chests 5. Prague 6. Lonelily (request) 7. Delicate 8. I Remember 9. Rootless Tree 10. Amie 11. Cold Water 12. Halleluiah ENCORE 13. "Couldn't Love You More" ( I guess this is the cover that Lisa and Vyvienne almost did in Philly) 14. Blower's Daughter 15. Cannonball 16. Eskimo Friend (with violin player from The Frames) 17. Song with some Frames members, something about "workin for my lord" They would have played longer but the union laws cut the show short. OK, now my comments: I arrived about 10 minutes late and missed the beginning of The Frames but they were really good. I loved the song they did about the mixed tape. They got a standing ovation and they got to do an encore (which was amazing). That is unusual for an opener. Oh, and they are SO HOT, especially the singer. Damien's set list didn't have any surprises. (except Lonelily) Everyone's performances tonight were really tight. The sound at The Beacon was good. BIG AND LOUD! Some of the things that made this show a little different were... Lisa played keyboards/organ during "Woman Like A Man", "Prague", and the request song. I couldn't really hear what she was playing though. Vyvienne, who kept kind of under the radar tonight, played the organ during "Cold Water". Made it sound more like the album. During Amie they did the big disco ball, shooting star thing. It was cool at The Beacon because they didn't hang a backdrop and they kept the whole stage open. The whole place just lit up. Also, Lisa came out and twirled these streamers and did a little dance off to the side. I can't decide if it was cool or just strange. I think if it was anyone else but Lisa, it would have been really corny but she's cool so it was ok. Damien broke out the electric guitar for "Woman Like A Man". That was the first time I saw him play any other guitar than the beat up acoustic. Lisa also played some electric guitar embellishments on "Delicate" and "Cannonball". She looks so cute with the guitar. Damien told some nice long stories tonight. I like when he talks to the crowd. He told a new story before Amie instead of the regular "pissed off" story. It was about how he stayed at a friends house (girl) but wound up sleeping alone and out frustration wrote that song. Again, all of the performances were really awesome tonight and the whole band was really on BUT TOMO was especially rocking tonight. He played some fills in "I Remember" that were fantastic. His vocals especially stood out during "Cold Water". GO TOMO! It was great to finally see Damien in a seated venue. The crowd, as always, was awesome. Love the Damien crowd. Oh, and track 9 on stufettes list was Rootless Tree which was probably the highlight of the show for me...I will post more about this one day. The show at the Beacon was better than I ever imagined it could be. I'm still on cloud 9.

Yes yes yes He DID play lonelily! I don't have time to write more because I have to get breakfast and get ready for the drive to Boston. I will write a book about it one day. The show was even better than the Philly show...but it was a completely different show. It's amazing how they can play many of the same songs and yet have it be a totally different gig.

I will look for you among those 2,000 I'll be sitting somewhere and most likely wear my eskimofriends t-shirts. I did actually run into an eskimofriend on the way out last time they played here. We recognized each other by our t-shirts. (Pauuuuuuudy!!! )

Last night's show was so amazing! It was my first time seeing the Frames and they were unbelievable. During one of the songs Glen got so into it, itlooked like he was going into spasms (my pervy friend said he looked like he was doing something else). And it was so cute when he cursed, then noticed some little kids near the front, and said "sorry". Then pointed at himself and said "Irish", and started doing a little dance and singing "we like to drink, we like to curse." BeforeGlen sang "God Bless Mom" he dedicated the song to Dick Cheney's mom, at the bass player's suggestion, and said something like, "Did they not have birth control back then?" I cheered so loud when he said that! And during Fake, he changed the words to something like "your president's a fake, don't vote for him again". But said, "Oh no, I meant presence." Yay Glen! And it was so cute when he sang a little Hard Knock Life, and said a few lines from Willy Wonka. The bass player was really good on backing vocals. During Damien's set I was so surprised when someone yelled out "Lonelily!" And he said "Alright". And then he went straight into it. But after he said "Did anyone notice I sang the first verse three times?" And he talked a lot more last night, some new stories. It was like he had a lot on his mind and he was just talking out loud, just wandering thoughts. He said something about how everyone feels emotions differently, and he's talked to others and knows that other people don't feel emotions like him. And how things are great, but there are just one or two things he wishes were different. And about a friend who just takes you for who you are, and all the cynicism just falls away when you're with them... And Lisa doing "Couldn't Love You More" was incredible! With her voice and the reverb...I've never heard anything like it. And for the last song, six of them gathered around the mic in a circle and did this sort of bluegrass song...it was pretty cool. Amazing show! |

Funniest moment of my night was pat kicking me in the shins during the encore (because he couldn't talk while he was taping) and pointing down the aisle at you with the camera completely out in the open. I thought one of the techs on stage was going to see you and send security over.

Beacon:
I think he went really well to both extremes last night. The raw stuff was loud and viscious and really brought him out; it was what it should be; But then, right after that kind of outburst, he counters with something stunningly sweet and beautiful and quiet, whether from Lisa or him, the contrast is spine tingling, more dramatic. It silences the audience so you can hear every 'plink' of his guitar string. It's hard to keep your eyes off Lisa. When she's taking the lead vocals its one thing, but her creativity when she's in the background is another. No one else would even think to add what she does to a tune I even like when she sits on the floor like a spectator. I saw Natalie Merchant do those streamers once. She looked silly. Not Lisa. I've listened to the Frames Set List a dozen or so times and that was the first I had herd them - they are as good live as they were recorded live on that CD. They were grateful to for the reception they got too. - They played Star Star. What happens when the heart just stops two of my favorites .. Damien and the band seemed to enjoty themselves which must be hard to do night after night. The final gig of the tour at the Beacon should be special D |

Your set list is wrong, by the way. I was writing in the dark, so I wrote a couple songs on top of each other and lost the order. I thought it was volcano; chests; woman; lonelilly; prague, but I could be wrong, will check the tape.
However, I know for a fact delicate didn't get played twice. Where you have it listed in the encore, that was Blower's Daughter |

Hey, Rollingstone.com has posted 18 pics from this gig. Although their website only works intermittently, when you can get it to work, the pictures can be found here: http://www.rollingstone.com/photos/bigphoto.asp?gid=8391 |
