Learning acoustic Guitar... simple guide

I am a Forum Newbie and a guitar newbie.... Something I would love to do is learn how to play the Guitar, just for my enjoyment....

My Girlfriend has a guitar (its in the loft,has been for a few years, possibly warped now [img]smileys/smiley11.gif[/img]) but if I was to buy a new one, any advice what to buy/ask for/look for/what to look *not* for as such etc...

If anyone is based in North London, if they can recommend any good teachers, please do =))

Any advice welcome.....

solid woods are better than laminate (will loosen and sound better with age and play, laminate sounds now as good as it ever will, also solids are just more resonant and richer). if not all solid, at least get a solid top, usually spruce or cedar unless it's an all mahogany or koa guitar.

when shopping for a guitar, get a really nice well made martin, taylor, larivee, loden, etc. in the store to compare the sound with one you're actually thinking ofbuying (unless you are going to drop big bucks on one of those brands above). have someone play them while you stand in front about 10 feet or so. compare volume, balance, tone, resonance, sustain, etc.

also play them yourself, even if you can't really play. just get a feel for each guitar. you will eventually find one that begs you to buy it
