I need to verify...
a story I heard. I was with some friends and this guy I had never met and he asked me what artists/bands I like. I told him some names, including Damien, and he said something a little surprising.
He told me that he knew of Damien and that Damien will only play a certain song when "his girl" is in the room. He couldn't remember the song but seemed certain the story was true. He then went on to describe damo as really pretentious...yada yada yada... Has anyone heard of that story before? |

I've never heard anything like that. Most stories are made up.

am I supposed to know who 'his girl' is? Or what the song is?
Or is it just random? Sounds a little odd, but not wholely unbelievable...

Here's the story. I forgot what interview I saw it in but I can definitely look it up. Now I don't know if this is what that guy you were talking to was refering to but this is what I know. The thing is, Damien was talking about when he recorded The Blower's Daughter in this specific interview. He talked about how he would do take after take and still nothing seemed good enough. So he then decided to call up the girl the song was about and pretty much said "Hey, I was wondering if I could show you something...mind comin' over?" So she did and what he did from there was amazing. Damo sat her down, picked up the Lowden, hit record and it's been history since. He ended up using that same exact take for the album O. He then went on to mention how it was very special having her there and how the song just came alive and stuff. So in a nutshell, whenever you hear the recording of The Blower's Daughter on O, just imagine Damien sitting in front of the very girl it's about in his home. It's quite an amazing event in my opinion. I can only imagine just how amazing it must of been having the inspiration for the song in the same room when he recorded it. Genius.

yeah i remember that story. i told the guy that but he insisted that wasnt it and that there is some song he wont play unless his girlfriend is in the room because he feels it would be "lying." the guy then went on to describe damo as some head-in-the-clouds, pretentious artist.

well, the first time i mentioned Damien Rice to somebody i met recently, he said, "oh yeah that irish bloke who had an ilicit affair with a 14 year old..."
'Lord, she's still too young to treat...' haha, it's all b*llocks.

Totally true Nine. Even when I met him he was totally cool and very approachable. He said some very kind and inspirational things to me that I'll never forget and it was at the last Oakland show where my admiration for him grew a hundredfold! I really don't care what others say and it's at this time I believe we should leave the gossip alone. People say what they want and that's it, talk to the man yourself and see what happens. And out of all the people I listen to (musically) he tops the list as being the overall wonder. ****in' amazing!

Lauren, sounds like your friend just at half a fart and now feels like spitting it out whenever Damien's name is mentioned.

lalla32. I heard the story Valentino talked about. He told it in a short film made for Channel 4 back in 2004ish called Headliners. It made the hairs on the back of my head stand up. "And that was the take". You might find a copy on the interwebythingy. It's only about 23 mins long but the picture quality is absolutely awesome. Most songs are partials but 'Cold Water' is magnificent.

Describing Damien as a "head-in-the-clouds, pretentious artist" alone should lead you to know the story as false. I met him, and was was the most down to earth "celebrity" I have ever met. Even refer to him as celebrity and he would deny and turn red. So I say, the guy was shooting some bull your way.
