Default Anthony And The Johnson!

Has anybody heard these guys? I saw somebody mention them in a thread somewhere! I first saw them when they performed with Boy George on Friday Night Wiith Johnathon Ross, when they played 'Your My Sister'. And that got me hooked, i got their album the other day and it rocks! It has to be one of the best albums i have bought all year! They are such a good band!

I disagree.

I find that voice somewhat disgusting (and i do like bands like clap your hands say yeah), it really makes me wanna cut off the singer's johnson, argh. The music itself is okay.

he's very gifted and talented, and the album is just so beautiful. if everyone could reach the zenith of their lives and be able to say "i am a bird now" there would be heaven on earth.

it's wierd to hear antony and the johnsons talked about as a "band". "The johnsons" just means other people who appear on the album; rufus wainright, boy george, lou reed, devendra banhart and alll the other musicians.

His voice is quite difficult to get over at first, but it's haunting beauty just resonates and emulates inside u. he's like a big cuddly angel.

I first saw him on jools holland, quite a few months ago and he just totally bewildered me, i thought about him for a while, and while his song was rising inside of me, i realised that i really liked him; even if i had the backing track of my mum saying "he's wierd", then i got so happy when he won the mercury music prise. his live performance of "hope there's someone" on there was absolutely mooving.

glad u like him beevers, i'll shut up now... i Antony

That was beautifully said. Did you see the Dutch interview with him on VPRO? I really liked that one.

The band are actually these ladies and gentlemen: The Johnsons Some of them have played in his orchestra for years. The artists collaborations you mention were just for this album for all I know.

All the talk about these guys made me want to check them out and I found a DVD over at dimeadozen . You have to have an account to download it though, and last time I checked the website was at its limit.

well i heard antony say "The johnsons is just a group of different musicians who come and go," or something to that effect

so allot of the people that just played on the album are still "johnsons" even if they only feature once... do u think they get little "i am a johnson" badges? like blue peter badges.

Is that like 'Norah Jones and Her Very Handsome Band?'

i really like his voice... it's strangely beautiful and kind of heartbreaking especially when he sings hope theres someone simon introduced me to them and the music is so unique i liked them immediately. i get tired of hearing the same old thing and this is definitely something unusual...

the cellist in the band was one of the founding members of rasputina, they're a really quirky and odd cello-based group. i always liked them and i think she does the string arrangements for antony which are gorgeous... there are three animations now on their homepage and a video for hope theres someone in the news section along with some interviews (its on the site angela linked to)

Man, Antony and the Johnsons are great. Both their albums are all ive been listening to recently. The lyrics are hauntingly beautiful and his voice compliments this perfectly. Fistful of Love is my personal fave, along with Hitler In My Heart and Deeper Than Love. All the songs are great. I almost like em as much as Damien...

Ah. Hmmmm....I would think the major label artists who sing on his album and are "on loan" from their respective labels would be called "collaborators". None of them are listed on the "The Johnsons" page.

But that's just me, guessing and it probably doesn't matter all that much

Yup it's Lou Reed on guitar in fistful of love. My only complaint with I Am a Bird Now is it's too short!! Every song is beautiful, whether life-affirming or the opposite remains ambiguous (for me anyway). Didn't know Rufus was on it until I listened to What Can I Do and I was like, "What the-? What's Rufus's voice doing here?!!"

And that voice who read the poem is Julia Yasuda, a hermaphrodite Professor in Set Theory. Do not let her rendition mislead you into thinking she is some Chinese/Japanese tourist who has just started her lessons in the English language!! (which I initially did, to my embarassment)

Thumbs up

antony and the johnsons are great.

in the song "free at last" from I am a bird now - what the heck is that?? It's like a combination of morris code and burt from sesame street.

nice to know this album got the Mercury Prize.
antony sounds like a big poppinfresh i wanna hug.
does he look like that?

true it is too short but i'd rather short music of brilliance than vast quantities of shíet.

"Bird Guhls can fly"

yeah, i can see what he/they're doing is quite cool, in daring opening up for emotional intensity like they do - a bit like damien does, which is a great part of what makes him great to me - but i just can't stand that antony's voice. sorry, wish i could but i don't.
