I just learned today that there will be rallies on Thursday to protest the inauguration of Bush. Anyone here going to be a part of it? I wish I could go, but I have class, although my prof. seriously considered just taking the class to the rally instead of proceeding with class as planned. Anyway, the arrangement is if you're against the inauguration and can't go to the rally, you can still participate by not buying anything on that day. So, if you can, try to make purchases (gas, food, etc) the day before or hold off 'til the following day. Edited by: minneken1911

i live near d.c., but i'm not going. it's snowing here, and downtown will probably be a mess tomorrow. i'll definately take part in the black thursday thingor whatever it's called. plus i'll probably send him a few e-mails, though the responses are always the same: your comments are very important to the president . . . yeah right. i don't think anybody over in the white house actually reads the e-mails, but it makes me feel better to send them. |

I thinkthey are having a march or something here in Atlanta, and something about wearing black clothes, or a black ribbon showing your dis-support (made up my own word here) of the inauguration

personally i think some people just like to complain. i highly doubt most of these same people would complain if kerry had won the election. people are making it sound like he is this evil man who is using taxpayer money to finance an unprecedented extravaganza. and thats just not true. clintons 2nd cost more. But a review of the cost for past inaugurations shows Mr. Bush's will cost less than President Clinton's second inauguration in 1997, which cost about $42 million. When the cost is adjusted for inflation, Mr. Clinton's second-term celebration exceeds Mr. Bush's by about 25 percent. According to the Consumer Price Index, $42 million in 1997 is the equivalent of $49.5 in 2004. The significant majority of funding for this year's festivities, including nine officials balls, are from private donations and tickets for events held by the Presidential Inaugural Committee, a similar setup to fund raising Mr. Clinton used to underwrite his inauguration. Mr. Clinton had a record 12 balls in 1997. A Jan. 20, 1997, story by USA Today estimated about $12.7 million of Mr. Clinton's inauguration was financed by U.S. taxpayers. Initial estimates indicate the District will foot about $17 million in security costs this year. i do have a complaint that the security costs are coming from homeland security funds but it can certainly be argued that that is a correct usage of the funds. get over it people ....hes president. all this bitching just sounds like a bitterperson complaining that his/her ex has moved on. deal with it and move on. where were all the complaints from dems when the democratic national convention cost taxpayers 10's of millions of dollars? when the candidate was already picked and known. no need for that party. people complain that bush spent 200 million on the election itself. but dont complain that kerry spent almost as much.the oscars. how much money is spent on the oscars? tens of millions. what a worthless party that is. each presenter gets like 5,000 dollars worth of gifts for the 'honor' of presenting. give that to tsunami victims. cancel that and give it to victims. millions will be spent on the dresses alone for that night. what a waste that is. 100 million dollars will be spent by americans this weekend alone at the movies. my god! how many humvees will that buy? the owner of the dallas mavericks complained about this inauguration....he spends 100 million a yearpaying men to run around and play a game. cancel the rest of the basketball season and give that waste of money to something better. the super bowl...over a billion dollars will be spent on advertising alone for this game and what willl everyone say about that? did you see that one budlight commercial? funny as hell! this is something that has been done since the start of this country. might as well cancel fourth of july fireworks too. it is only done every 4 yrs. yes it is a lot of money. but most of it is from private citizens. and they can spend their money however they want to in my opinion. do i find it wasteful? of course. but there are plenty of things that are. i findthis to be more sour grapes than anything else. oh yeah....i do hate bush. but i find that many of the complaints hurled his way by many on the left are notmade in similar situations if it involves a democrat. people want to complain, fine. just do so no matter what side of the aisle it is the action takes place from. i mean cmon...bush has ten or so thousand civilian deaths on his head(not saying that isnt a big deal).but people say it is the 'death of humanity'? clinton helped kill hundreds of thousands of people in iraq with deadly sanctions. people compare bush to hitler....hitler tried to wipe out an entire race. 10's of millions dead.. stalin- what? 60 million deaths? mao tse tung, saddam, many others....ive said it before ill say it again...perspective people. jason the geneva convention prohibits the starving of civilian populations and the destruction of what is indispensable for their survival. "When asked on US television if she [Madeline Albright, US Secretary of State] thought that the death of half a million Iraqi children [from sanctions in Iraq] was a price worth paying, Albright replied: "This is a very hard choice, but we think the price is worth it.""

Get off your high horse Jason. Stop giving people sh*t for protesting in their own ways. You have no idea whether these people would have protested Clinton's inaugural (or Kerry's), as well. |

What's funny is that I've seen TONS of studies that prove that people most often agree with both sides, but after choosing a side their minds essentially block out any good that comes from the opposing side. PS, I gaurantee that protests of inauguratoins will never change anything (at least in the US), but I respect you for trying. |

I'm not a Democrat or a Republican, but I'll tell you what's really irritating: going to school in Colorado with kids whose parents have totally brainwashed them into being dedicated to the Republican party. My desks were covered with things like "Vote Bush," "Four More Years," and "Kerry Sucks." Huge guys with cowboy hats and cowboy boots (nowhere near a farm or anything that would require a 10-gallon hat) roamed the halls kicking people in theFACE for wearing Kerry apparel (its usually a safe bet to wear third party apparel since nobody really pays THAT much attention to politics). Its things like that that make me hate Bush. On second thought, demonizing political candidates is incredibly ridiculous...
