I just realised. MCD is the company in charge of the BudRising gigs, which are always the late August Marley Park gigs. MCD aren't Aiken. So if Damien's doing gigs for MCD in late August, it stands to reason (because of the six-month rule) that he won't be doing any for Aiken before the end of February.

Or put into a sentence, he would be legally unable to host the Big Tree at the Electric Picnic this year.

if its gonna be his only one in ireland this year then im more than willing to pay it.
especially because of the timing. its perfect...a nice wee outin before i grind down to a year of the Leaving Cert.

Can you explain the six month rule in more detail or is it that simple?
can once-off (promo's ? ) be excluded?

this doesnt sound at all appealing to me

Damien rice - Mcd - 50 euro - outdoors in a field

not that im one to give out about outdoor gigs. i love marley park gigs. but im not really in the humour for hearing him sing quiet songs in a field with irish people, it just doesnt work and been down that road before

having said that ill probably still go. hopefully theres a good line-up and he plays louder songs

Well as it was explained to me, the six-month rule is a standard part of every gig contract that exists in this country, it effectively says that when an artist plays a show, they agree not to play a show for a rival promoter for at least six months.

There is no exclusion, this definitely won't be any different. Imagine you're the head of MCD and you're trying to sell 8,000 tickets at fifty quid a go to an artist who usually plays to 500 people for a tenner each. While already chancing your arm, you're trying to rake in 400 grand on ticket sales and god knows how much more in advertising, beer and souveniers on the day. You're comfortably able to do this because they have the only Irish Damien Rice show this year all to yourself.

Would you be okay with your contractually obliged artist playing what is arguably the coolest gig in the country four days after you have your infinitely less cool gig on? Especially considering that 95% of your targeted audience would already have their Electric Picnic tickets?

Believe me, it's not about what's best for the fans...

Fionn Regan is still trying to sell 200 tickets for a Whelans gig, and they're ninteen euros. That gig has been onsale for a while too... I don't see how he could help shift 8,000 at fifty quid a go.

The fact he sucks wouldn't help either.

Marlay Park has a capacity closer to 20,000 though methinks, not 8,000!

Ignoring the fact he could choose to play the Olympia or somewhere rather than Vicar St should he want to, I can think of plenty of examples where artists have broken this so-called 6 month rule.

Cork's evening echo has an article on ticket touts in which it mentions:

'Ticketmaster said it is liaising closely with concert promoters to stop the touts in particular for shows by The Who and Damien Rice in Dublin and Cork this summer.'

so maybe damien will play at the Marquee Festival in Cork in June as well... although maybe not, as that's an aiken event i think...

That's funny, they managed to squeeze in 17,000 for the Frames and possibly more for Radiohead. Don't trust Wikipedia.

Well in any case my estimate of them making €400,000 in ticket sales was wrong. Now it's a cool million.

The Who are doing Marlay Park w/MCD and Marquee Cork w/Aiken....so it's very possible. Dunno how it all works out with 6 month rules or whatever (if this rule exists), but it is happening.

I guess it would depend on whether it was specified in their gig contract. I couldn't see that they'd make very much money with Damien playing the Picnic four days after the Bud Rising thing though.
