Default gently johnny

i was reading the thread about the atlantic city show and i'm curious about the cover (traditional song?) that damien closed the show with.. i think it may be from the soundtrack of a film called 'the wicker man'.. i found an mp3 of the song (it streams in quicktime)

the music kind of drops out for dialogue from the film halfway through but you get the idea..

http://www.iancutler.com/sound/gently.mp3

here are the lyrics for the quicktime or broadband impaired:

I put my hand on her thigh
And she says do you want to try
I put my hand on her belly
And she says do you want to fill me

Gently gently gently Johnny
Gently Johnny my jingalo

I put my hand on her knee
And she says do you want to see
I put my hand on her breast
And she says do you want a kiss

Gently gently gently Johnny
Gently Johnny my jingalo

people who were at the borgata gig.. is it the same song? i would love to hear damien's version

That's a really weird film, kinda like alice in wonderland, but without the fun or enjoyment.

i dunno, i kind of enjoyed it when the witches burnt the christian in the end for a change (kidding, kidding)

it is a trippy film.. i've always liked it but people have whole websites about it and bands have covered the songs etc. i never realized it had such a huge cult following.. i even heard somewhere it's the basis of the burning man festival

i think it might be the same song tho, how weird is that?! unless damien's also a fan of the film.. hmm..

It's pretty much Damien's cup of tea apparently, I do remember a scene with a lot of dancing hairy naked people, some english accents that I've never heard an actual english person use and production values to rival those public service announcements trying to promote the use of cheese to make yourself more attractive to women (yes, we actually do have those here).

Television in Ireland is becoming more and more like dropping a microtab in disneyland, I swear to god.

Nah, I just said no. Honestly though, our government has been trying to convince people to;

A) Pay their tv licenses
B) Eat butter
C) Eat eggs
D) Drink milk
E) Go to Belfast

All by maintaining by association that young men who do any of the above, will be in the company of attractive woman who want to have sex with them. I really don't know how we ever got a reputation for being a drunk nation, at this point we should have all been sitting in front of the tv drinking milk and eating scrambled eggs in belfast for most of our lives, hoping to get laid. Can I have someone Irish to back me up in these (seemingly outrageous) claims?

Apparently the Sneaker Pimps did this song back in 1997.

http://www.mp3.com/albums/257813/summary.html

I am curious of the origins of the song now.

Yeah, this is the song they sang last. From the bit of internet searching I did, "Gently Johnny, My Jingalo" is a traditional English folk song: "Written in the 12th century, Gently Johnny is a traditional song about sexuality and pleasure."

or it's a song for the movie The Wicker Man(1973), written by Paul Giovanni.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Giovanni

it's a very sensual song, you can find some covers on the net, but with her exceptional voice and her talent, Lisa did it with more than just sensuality.

well the songs from the film are a mix of original compositions and modern interpretations of traditional folk music.. they talk about it here where i found the lyrics

http://www.wicker-man.com/musicofthewickerman.php

gently johnny is a modern adaptation of a folk song that goes back to the medieval period apparently, so it's actually pretty ancient.. i doubt anyone would have heard it in recent times except through the film though, paul giovanni sounds like he was kind of an historian and archivist of obscure folk music..

it's an interesting choice for a cover

i just now saw a commercial on tv and apparently they did a remake of 'the wicker man' with ellen burstyn (i love her) and nicolas cage and it's coming to theaters next month.. it made me wonder if they used the original music at all, maybe lisa sang on the soundtrack or something.. would be cool if so

Anyone ever come across a recording of Damien doing this song? I'd really love to hear it.
