e isso ai
my daughter's friend spent the last year studying in peru and came back with a cd she made me listen to, because she absolutely adores the artist and also likes damien..
i don't usually like covers but this one of the blower's daughter is nicely done by ana carolina, a singer from brazil.. she changed it a bit and put her own latin flavor on it, but i was wondering if the lyrics translate the same? sadly, i don't speak spanish.. or is it portugese? here's a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjmLI0VyLmM and the song is up on her myspace page too http://www.myspace.com/anacarolinabrasil Last edited by SisterMidnight; 08-07-2006 at 03:41 AM. |

A vida sempre continua So there it is Like some people said it was gonna be A life so simple and good(?) Almost all the time So there it is People walking on the streets (literally it's more like "steps on the streets") Nobody sees/cares about the moon Lifes always goes on Eu não sei parar de te olhar Eu não sei parar de te olhar Não vou parar de te olhar Eu não me canso de olhar Não sei parar De te olhar And I don't know how to stop looking at you And I don't know how to stop looking at you I won't stop looking at you I don't get tired of looking at you I don't know how to stop Looking at you É isso aí Há quem acredite em milagres Há quem cometa maldades Há quem não saiba dizer a verdade So there it is To those who believe in miracles To those who do evil To those who don't know how to tell the truth É isso aí Um vendedor de flores Ensinar seus filhos a escolher seus amores So there it is A flower vendor Teaches his children how to choose their lovers?/who to love(?) Eu não sei parar de te olhar Não sei parar de te olhar Não vou parar de te olhar Eu não me canso de olhar Não vou parar de te olhar And I don't how to stop looking at you I don't know how to stop looking at you I won't stop looking at you I don't get tired of looking at you I won't stop looking at you I checked her myspace and Quem de Nois dois is also a cover. i love the original too, it's by an italian guy called gianluca griniani, i uploaded the song. thanks for the link edit: instead of adding the translation, i deleted my previous message my portiguese is not very good tho, i used an old dictionary for some of the words

thank you cali! you're a peach
so the title of the song has been changed from the blower's daughter to so there it is ? that made me laugh for some reason hmm don't know about the lyric modification though, that's always been something you shouldn't toy with in my opinion.. but maybe it didn't translate well as it was? still.. damien would have had to given his permission right? anyway it's a different take on the song, it's good to hear damien's music is reaching other cultures and people who appreciate it enough to cover it.. the crowd seemed to appreciate it too, i guess they play it all over the radio there |

Whew! For a minute there I thought it was gonna be that other even more horrible foreign video version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwsn3Wwx6q0 But I agree, Sis, I don't like what she did to it in this one either. Far too many liberties taken with music, melody and, apparently, lyrics: "so (whoomp!) there it is"?. Too commercial and self consciously uplifting in the arrangement as if it was meant to be anthemic and her voice sounds exactly like a dude is singing. Surreal and quite freaky.

Cali,
So that is the dude from "The Life Aquatic" then?!! I thought it was but wasn't completely sure. Yes, I quite like his stuff too; but, as I said, it's mainly her odd mannish voice and her atrocious re-writing of it (not just 'so it is': almost every other line is totally different! Jeez lady, just write your own music already) from Damo's tale of "beautiful sadness" into an uplifting "let's all join in singing along around the campfire" tune that really ruins it for me. Kumbayah, anyone? Related Rant: I endured the most excruciating (Rock n' Roll!) butchering of "Hamlet" once in which he did the whole "to be or not to be" soliloquy passing out candles to the front row of the audience and then having them each light their neighbor's! Awww! How inspirational! It's "Touched by A Hamlet" Note to director: turning a desperate, dark moment of isolated suicidal contemplation into a nurturing "sharing is caring" Stuart Smalley seminar is about as wrongheaded an interpretation as possible. Doing so implies, at the very least, that the character already possesses the elusive wisdom he seeks before he even asks the question!!! Which renders the mounting series of epiphanies contained within it meaningless, invalid or moot.

like i said i'm not nuts about the lyrics re-write, but otherwise i really enjoyed this particular cover, moreso than any of the others i've heard anyway.. and if that's the guy from 'life aquatic' i love him, those were the most excellent bowie covers i've ever heard! |

I have to admit the last few days the Portuguese one has been entrenched in my head now too. Seu's half, that is. Damned catchy chorus in any language.

Portuguese/brasilian versions...
Here it goes, but Cali did an excelent job
I must say this lyrics are quite stupid... and this is not the only version i know from a brasilian singer. There´s another one form Simone. I´ll translate it as well. É Isso Aí Ana Carolina Damien Rice (vers.: Ana Carolina) É isso aí Como a gente achou que ia ser A vida tão simples é boa Quase sempre É isso aí Os passos vão pelas ruas Ninguém reparou na lua A vida sempre continua And that´s it Like we thought it was gonna be Simple life is so goo Almost everytime and that´s it steps on the streets Nobody notices the moon Lifes always goes on Eu não sei parar de te olhar Eu não sei parar de te olhar Não vou parar de te olhar Eu não me canso de olhar Não sei parar De te olhar I don't know how to stop looking at you I don't know how to stop looking at you I won't stop looking at you I don't get tired of looking at you I don't know how to stop Looking at you É isso aí Há quem acredite em milagres Há quem cometa maldades Há quem não saiba dizer a verdade And that´s it Some believe in miracles Some do evil Some don't know how to tell the truth É isso aí Um vendedor de flores Ensinar seus filhos a escolher seus amores And that´s it A flower seller Teaches his children how to choose their lovers Eu não sei parar de te olhar Não sei parar de te olhar Não vou parar de te olhar Eu não me canso de olhar Não vou parar de te olhar And I don't how to stop looking at you I don't know how to stop looking at you I won't stop looking at you I don't get tired of looking at you I won't stop looking at you ---------------- Então Me Diz - Simone Então me diz Nada é tão triste assim A vida é boa pra mim Mais que o normal So tell me Nothing is all that sad Life is good to me More than the usal Então me diz Qualquer história De amor e glória, eu sei Não dá mais pra voar So tell me Any story Of love and glory I know we can´t fly anymore Não sei olhar sem você Eu só tenho olhar pra você Eu só sei olhar pra você Eu só sei olhar pra você Só sei olhar pra você Eu não sei olhar... I don´'t know how to look without you I just have to look at you I just know how to look at you I just know how to look at you I don´t know how to look Então me diz Frases feitas comuns Já sei, ficamos no ar Mais que o normal So tell me Common words I know, we stay still More than the usual Então me diz Faz frio agora A musa inglória partiu Negando seu papel So tell me It´s cold now The non glory muse as gonne Denying her role E eu nem sei olhar sem você Eu não sei olhar sem você Eu não sei olhar sem você Eu só sei olhar pra você Só sei olhar pra você Eu só sei olhar... I don´'t know how to look without you I just have to look at you I just know how to look at you I just know how to look at you I don´t know how to look Uh...nunca disse, te amo Nunca disse, que estranho Nem importa mais I never told you i love you Never told you, how strange It doesn´t matter anymore E eu só sei pensar em você Eu só sei pensar em você Eu só sei pensar com você Eu só sei pensar com você Só sei pensar em você Só sei pensar...pensar... I only know to think about you I only know to think about you I only know to think about you I only know to think

thank you for taking the time to translate for us, raquel! i had no idea the song (or damien in general) was so popular in brazil, but people really need to quit butchering the lyrics! can they not just sing the same thing damo sings only in portuguese??

Yeah, I'm Brazilian and this song was a freakin' sensation here, everybody going crazy 'bout it. The big problem is that actually TWO different female singers released their versions of TBD AT THE SAME TIME!
So, as you can imagine, we'd hear the songs (and also the original one, from mr. Damo himself) 24-7, which was a bit annoying. TBD (the original one) was also scored in one of our biggest soap operas (they're HUGE here), so it was also a bit frustrating to see all these go-with-the-latest-trend people humming the lyrics (obviously they had no idea what he was talking about - or sorta did, through the 2 versions in Portuguese... well, dunno), people who'd never even heard of him and just liked him 'cause of the romantic and sorta cheesy (let's be honest) lyrics and melody. There was a big discussion in sites related to Damien in Brazil whether it was a good thing or not (actually, the debate began with TBD in Closer and then grew with the soap opera), whether having everyone knowing him and his work was a tragedy (people with no taste in music singing his songs) or the best thing ever (which would mean a very minimal - nevertheless bigger - chance of him coming here to perform). And now, our newest soap opera scores Cannonball. They don't play it that much on the radio, and all the fuzz about Damo seems to be vanishing... I think that, in the end, it was for the best. Those who didn't know him and got to like him, good. Those who didn't know him and then rapidly forgot him over James Blunt (yeah, he's sorta big here), even better. His absolutely amazing and incomparable talent cannot be appreciated - or understood, for that matter - by everyone. All I kow is that I truly worship him.

I admit that I liiiiiiiiike it a lot!!! But I'm a sucker for songs in Portugese... I think it's an amazing language and just the sound of the words is great...
Loved especially the chorus, the verses were just ok, some lines didn't rhyme or had the wrong metric but as a whole the song was cool!! |

Simone's version wasn't a hit here, but it is more similar to the original TBD than Ana Carolina's version. You can hear it here: http://www.kboing.com.br/script/radi...mone&cat=music - You just have to click in "Então me diz". Simone is a famous singer here, but she's not as famous as she was 10 years ago. To be honest, I don't like her voice. Her accent is too ugly. Ana Carolina is in the top 3 (I think she is) of most famous singers in Brazil. All her songs are hits. "É isso aí" was part of a CD/DVD show with Ana Carolina and Seu Jorge. She wrote this version for this project and it became a tremendous hit. Everyone had the refrain in their heads. "Eu não sei parar de te olhaaaar" (I don't know how to stop looking at yoooou). For those who asked, seu Jorge is the guy from "The aquatic life" (Here's a video of him playing a Bowie song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9s05rW9Kmk). He's a fantastic singer and promising actor. He also was in "City of god", a brazilian filme, as Mané Galinha. This movie was nominated for 4 oscars in 2004. He lived in the streets some years ago before being discovered by a theater director in Rio de Janeiro. More information about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seu_Jorge About the versions, Matheus has already said everything. I hope I helped with something interesting. |

I confess that I was not that crazy about E Isso Ai but... the song is stuck in my brain!!!! Now I was walking home and was literally screaming my lungs out singing Nao vai parar de te olhar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But yeah I admit I'm a sucker for Portuguese songs, I'm learning Portuguese so I'm a bit biased!!
I think the chorus is great and I think it's more or less well-translated. Translating is hard, you cannot do it word by word. Damien's original wouldn't work word by word in Portuguese, it has a different meaning... In Portuguese 'taking someone's eyes out' is literally poking someone's eyes out with a knife!! So I think what they say is ok, the general idea is the same... But the verses is pretty bad... They don't rhyme and the metric is wrong... and they did their own lyrics, they didn't translate the original, it's 100% free, so at least, the minimum was to get the metric and rhymes!!!! |

Translations
I hope you won't mind, raquelbs, but I'm afraid your translations aren't 100% right and understandable by our non-portuguese speaker friends. So I'm editing it, ok?

Well, I'm not an expert in English, but I think this way is better for the non-portuguese speaker members to understand. We can't forget it's impossible to translate things word by word. For example the verb "to stare" in Portuguese ("encarar") most of the time mean something bad. But I tried to use the same words as most as possible. Ana Carolina's version is very famous here in the Igloo because of Youtube, but for those who haven't listened to Simone yet, I posted it here: http://media.putfile.com/Simone---En...owers-Daughter (audio only). --- Quote:

thank you for clearing up the translations nilton! i already listened to the simone version that gustavo posted, but thanks for that too
oh and here latin refers to a genre/style of music (not a place of birth) and it means any music coming from latin american countries like salsa, bossa nova, samba or even flamenco from spain (for example) i know you're not italian |
