Aung San Suu Kyi Released!

Aung San Suu Kyi has been released from house arrest in Burma today! :) As you know, Damien has been a very active supporter of Aung San Suu Kyi, since his visit to refugee camps in Burma in 2004 with fellow musician Ani DiFranco. In 2005, Damien spoke about this trip and the song he released in his honour to Hot Press “I was quite impacted by the whole Burma experience,” toys Rice, “so when the US Campaign Far Burma asked me would I be interestested in doing a show in New York with Ani Di Franco and David Byrne, in aid of Aung San SUM Kyi, I said yeah, absolutely. But they had to pull out, so it looked like I was going to be doing the show on my own, which I was fine with. But then I asked the campaign, why am I doing this show? If it was to make money, I’d rather just give the money … “They said that creating awareness was more important just then. So lashed, what do you think is the most powerful way for me to do that? And they said, you could write a song far Suu Kyi. That’s what Lisa Hannigan and I did with ‘Unplayed Piano’. “I wanted the sang to be universal, personal, and to come from a human and emotional, not a political, point of view. I wanted it to be an expression of loss, but with a huge amount of hope in that loss. “Suu Kyi has so much potential that just hasn’t been realised. The majority of people in Burma want her as their leader. She seems like somebody that the world could benefit from, if she were let out. And the has asked people outside Burma, ‘Please, use your liberty ta promote ours’. “I see it on a very simple level. The country asked for this woman and the army didn’t allow it. I don’t think that should be happening. I’m excited, because I feel there’s a potential solution, and Suu Kyi is it. She’s the unplayed piano.”

Congratulations to everyone who's been involved in the campaign for her release!

A look back: The Blower’s Daughter

Sometimes it's nice to just go back in time and be reminded of your favorite songs. Here is a video of Damien performing "The Blower's Daughter" on Live From the Basement in 2007. Here's a little known fact... The original release of "The Blower's Daughter" single in Ireland in September 2001 was delayed after the first batch of CDs was destroyed in a fire on the ferry between Britain and Ireland...

Melanie Laurent Recording with Damien

French actress Melanie Laurent has been speaking again about Damien's influence on her musical career. Here is an extract from her interview with The Independent newspaper in Great Britain. "Working with Damien on my first CD as a singer also makes me lose confidence, because compared to him I'm not a singer. But I think it's important to lose confidence because if you don't, then you risk just being the same actress all the time."

Watch Damien Live Online Tonight

EskimoFriends comes live from sunny rainy Reykjavik tonight... UPDATE 2: Damien performed 2 songs, "The Professor" and "The Blower's Daughter. He then reappeared on stage a little later to perform an Icelandic song with Lara Runarsdottir, a group of Iceland musicians and Glen Hansard. If you missed the performance you will be able to watch it online shortly from here. UPDATE 1: They've just changed the running order a bit... Damien is now scheduled to perform at 10:40PM BST... (Grazie mille Gloria)... I think we'll forgive the timing confusion as Icelandic people surely struggle with timekeeping because they have almost 24 hours of sunshine (with a little bit of rain) every day in the summer... In a few hours time, Damien will take the stage at the Inspired by Iceland event. You can be there too! Well, kind of... You can watch it live online from here. The concert starts at 9PM BST, which is a bit confusing... That's 9PM Irish time, 10PM in Germany, 4PM in New York, 1PM in LA, 2.30AM (weird) in Myanmar and 12PM in the eskimo stronghold of Kotzebue, Alaska. Damien is due to appear on the stage at 23.10 10:40PM BST, just after one of our other favourite singers, Glen Hansard, and right before Parabólur (cool).

Damien Performing in Iceland Next Week

On July 1st, Damien will be amongst the performers at a free concert in Iceland. The concert, entitled "Iceland Inspires", is part of a wider "Inspired by Iceland" campaign to promote tourism in the country, which has been negatively affected by the recent volcano ash cloud. Taking place on July 1st, near the now quiet Eyjafjallajökull volcano at Hamragarðar, near the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, this open-air concert will also feature performances by artists such as Amiina, Glen Hansard and many more. Fortunately, for those of us unable to get to Iceland, the entire concert will be streamed live online at 8PM.
